Scariest thing on UK TV ever?

Post by Ken Shabby »

Any suggestions?

That water safety/'I'll be back' ad in the 70s used to terrify me!

Eamonn Holmes, Simon Cowell, Jeremy Kyle, Janet Street Porter, Tony Blair.

Drama wise can't think of anything that really scared me. Some episodes of Boys from the Black Stuff were upsetting rather than scary.

Christ yes - that was scary shit to an 8 year-old.

The vampire kid tap-tapping at his mate's bedroom window in the original "Salem's Lot" was unnerving as well.

Good point, Mr Valleywater.

Thanks for the link, Eric. I've never actually seen Salem's Lot, but that clip certainly was creepy. I think if I'd have seen that when I was a kid, I wouldn't have slept for a month!

Anyone remember 'A Warning to the Curious'? I remember being really scared the first time I saw that!

I always thought the literacy ads with those horrible gremlins was scary, especially the really weird one in this ad:

Yeah, I'd forgotten about those. What were they thinking? That reminds me of those recent cellphone ads that had a woman in a multi-story car park being pursued by a ghostly young girl (It's style reminded me a bit of Japanese scary movies like 'Ring'). Those kind of scared me too.

I saw this on Doctor Who in the story "Terror Of The Autons" when I was a nipper, and it was a long time before I'd go anywhere near a black plastic chair afterwards, let alone sit in one.

Death by plastic chair:

When i was 7 or 8 I used to be frightened by the opening graphics to Armchair Thriller , the shadow that walked across and appeared to sit down on the armchair used to spook me .
I first watched American Werewolf in london on Philips laservision , the player i still have in my loft and a dozen or so discs , the effects for 1981 were great .

The Plastic Men, Jon Pertwee Dr Who.

Also, the first 15 minutes of an episode of Star Trek that I saw before my mother switched the telly off. Kirk etc beam down to what looks like a ghost down and get stones thrown at them by kids on the rooftops. Never seen it since. Think it might subsequently have been banned.

There was a made for TV film in the early '80's called 'Threads', set in Sheffield, which was about nuclear war. That was graphic as hell and scared the fuck out of me. Still does.
