Doing a 'Halliwell' certainly could be described as 'a bit wierd'.

I get the feeling that back in the day people like Joe Meek were genuinely 'weird' and it was a source of their creativity. Meek was like a savant of sorts and his thing was electronics. His formal education was limited eg his literacy was fairly poor.

Back to my point ... we're routinely presented with 'weirdness' in the media by people who are desperate to stay in the headlines to prolong their careers. This is contrived weirdness. It wasn't a choice with Meek and people like him.

Many of his most famous recordings were done in his flat above a shop I think.

He had the drummer sitting in the bedroom, guitarist on the stairs etc.

Mind you, Telstar still sounds good today, over 40 years later.

Was Telstar recorded on a Rolf Harris 'Stylophone' then, cos it sure sounds like it.

Wig, to put things into perspective for you the guy was like Mozart, Stockhausen, Brian Wilson and John Cage rolled into one. There are sounds on those records that even eminent sound engineers of today have no idea how he created, and no it wasn't by playing a Stylophone backwards through a flanger !

Yes. It was okay. The dude was very highly strung and this was worsened by drugs and the business side of things that he paid little attention to.

It was a very noisy film as Meek was shouting at people from start to finish. Chaos.
