I am at present watching, "Pentecost Praise from Brighton" on BBC1. It is an outdoor event of "Groovy young Christians" listening to a Christian group of all well scrubbed, nice young folk, albeit with more acne than in the general population. The worst thing of all is the vicar or pastor on stage, is in denim, wearing groovy specs AND A FUCKING HEADSET IF YOU PLEASE!!! Vicars don't wear headsets, they fumble around with old microphones and bang on them saying, "Errm one, two, three, errm bang! bang! bang! can anyone hear me out there?, bang!"
There as even a story of a girl who explained how she'd "Left God" and gone on a crazed drunken and drug fuelled spree of fun and the described how she felt empty and then phoned he dad and said, "Dad, I want to come back to God!". Yeah I bet her dad thought, "Yeah sure, you little slut, you actually want to touch me for another 20 quid more like!"
Anyway is it because I am in league with the Devil or do others feel equally irritated by Christians, "Celebrating?"
A proper vicar, please note absence of headset!

Slow day in Slip Tenements?
In case you are at a loss later, the Archers' Omnibus is on at 10 on Radio 4 and Songs of Praise is at 4.45 on Beeb1.

A few quick questions:
1) Who introduced the first educational establishments in this country?
2) Who opened the poor schools?
3) Who ran the first poor houses?
4) Who opened the first adoption agencies?
5) Who looked after widows and orphans before the advent of the welfare state?
Clue: It wasn't the atheists.
1) Who introduced the first educational establishments in this country?
The Church. But this wasn't a charitable act, it was because the Church knew that to control what could and could not be known gave them immense power and influence. Even over governments and monarchs.
2) Who opened the poor schools?
I refer you to my answer to question one.
3) Who ran the first poor houses?
The Church. But given it was just as wealthy as, if not wealthier than the government and monarchs of the day, given that it was exempt from taxes, given that it was mainly the poor and uneducated that it preached to and installed fear into those same people that many would rather give their last penny to the church rather than feed their starving children, I'd say it was the fucking least they could do.
4) Who opened the first adoption agencies?
The Church. It was an excellent way of acquiring new disciples as well as keeping up the indoctrination of the populace.
5) Who looked after widows and orphans before the advent of the welfare state?
My answers above could also cover this. There's a general theme throughout.
I could really have saved my time and answered every question with: "The Church, for their own interests."
Clue: It wasn't the atheists.
Given that Atheists were killed, tortured, imprisoned or at the very least, shunned from society and viewed as evil unbelievers, I can't see how any Atheistic body could have done the things you're crediting the Church for even if it wanted to.

I used to spend a lot of time criticizing Islam on here in the noughties - but things are much better now.
Re: Why are Christians SO annoying?
Whether it was an altruistic or selfish act, it was the Church that did all those things...
Re: Why are Christians SO annoying?
I attended a strict Catholic School which had been modelled on the lines of a concentration camp, except with desks. In fact we, the "Inmates", often joked, that the monks had been thrown out of the Gestapo.............for cruelty!
The point I am making is that I am well versed in the "Good works" of The Church. In fact the monks used to wax lyrical about the "Good old days" of the Spanish Inquisition, as they gleefully crushed your knuckles in a vice, whilst reciting their favourite verses from the Bible like,
Ephesians 4:32
"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." and turn the vice another turn and watch you scream!
So I don't need lectures on the good works of the Church, thanks!
My question was not about the Church but about, "Christians en masse". A gaggle of Christians always seems to be grinning from ear to ear and smug and they all seem to wear glasses, although so do I. They seem to be struck by a form of mass hysteria, which i find scary. To be honest they are even scarier than nutty political activists.

Because we know we are God's chosen people and on our way to Heaven.
