"Lord Rothermere did didn't he."
Indeed he did, I was going to link to a photo of one of his meetings, but thought this one showing a small selection of the League of German Maidens was more interesting:

The page 3 bird in the Sun would have her little comment box as well...
Melanie, 18, from Essex, thinks Adolf should use the successful bull's head battle tactic when taking Stalingrad.

Re: The Russian Front... WW2
It was a battle for racial survival. No rules, winner takes all.Mans inhumanity to his fellow man at its worst.I have got loads of books on it.Have you got
"The forgotten soldier" by Guy Sajer? Brilliant first hand account of fighting in the Gross Deutchsland division on the Eastern front
Re: The Russian Front... WW2
Thats one that is on my list to get.... good to get these "reviews" and advice etc.
I totally agree with your comments, it made the war in the West look positively a game...(not that I am taking away the lost and suffering from those campaigns...
I do wonder what would have happened if Hitler had allowed his generals to take Moscow and "bed down" for the winter...
Also Hitlers obsession with Stalingrad got completely out of proportion and cost him the sixth army... again if he had allowed them south to take the oil fields first the whole front could have been different by the following spring.

Yes, if Stalingrad had merely been called Tractorgrad or something similar, things might have been rather different.
Re: The Russian Front... WW2
The best one i have ever read though is
Enemy at the gates by william craig about the battle for stalingrad. The copy i have got was published in the 70's i think or earlier. The film is fucking shit after you have read the book.well worth looking for on the internet
Re: The Russian Front... WW2
yer enemy at the gates was one of the worst "war" films I have seen in the last few years.... the actors looked completely out of place...jude law as a sniper.. what a joke!
I do remember seeing "cross of Iron in the early 80's... i think that was loosely based on Sven Hassell books...

Re: The Russian Front... WW2
Yeh, chalk and cheese those two films. Only two good actors in Enemy at the Gate, and that was Bob Hoskins as Kruschev and Frank Harris as the German Major.
Now Cross of Iron was a real war film with top notch actors, and a story line that was as it was..

If provided with summer clothing in winter probably about as good as the Wermacht did with their summer clothing in winter.
The Wermacht were nothing if not professional. Don't make the mistake of mixing them up with the SS or Gestapo. They did their duty against terrible odds. Poor bastards, fighting the Russians, the Russian winter and fucking Adolf. 105,000 were captured by the Russians. 5000 made it back to Germany after the war.
