I see this most monstrous of all British Government`s, after opposing
an Orwellian 1984-style proposal to monitor all UK phone calls and emails,
as proposed by those evil Labour minions, is now suggesting the very
same thing !!
Soon Britain will have surveillance as tough as Communist China or Iran
and its bollocks to a free society. Old Orwell must be chuckling up in
heaven !

Yes to put it mildly this is a bit of a disappointment, isn't it?

Especially given the Coalition Agreement signed by Call me Dave and Cleggie had this section on the government's civil liberties programme.

"We will be strong in defence of freedom. The Government believes that the British state has become too authoritarian, and that over the past decade it has abused and eroded fundamental human freedoms and historic civil liberties. We need to restore the rights of individuals in the face of encroaching state power, in keeping with Britain?s tradition of freedom and fairness."

Off the top of my head I can only recall scrapping id cards, getting rid of some innocent people's DNA records whilst still keeping their details on the police database.

I don't think that you can call changing "curfews" to "overnight residency requirements" as a substantial change to control orders.

Other than that I cant remember any changes to "civil liberties". In fact it seems to be going the other way with huge cuts in legal aid which people like the Dowler family have said would have prevented them bringing a case against Murdoch's NOTW and various Tories bleating on about the Human Rights act and how restrictive it is.

To use the vernacular, this appears to be yet another about turn alongside "The NHS is safe with us", "If any minister comes to me with a plan to cut front line services I will send them away to revise those plans" which is really taking the piss.

Quesl fucking surprise! Looks like New Labours plans for a police state have been taken up by this bunch of hopeless tossers. Now stand by for New Labour to do the old, "We're nice guys really, we'll dismantle these Draconian powers if you elect us" then promptly carry on as usual if they do get elected.

Mind you these proposals have to go through parliament and the House of Lords, which is full of elderly trouble makers who answer to no one, so there is still some hope.

Now is the time to write encryption software packages for SMS and email! Simply write your email or message, encrypt it, send it and you recipient simply decodes it on his software. 256 bit encryption should keep GCHQ rather busy for the next 50 years unravelling messages saying things like, "Do you want stuffed crust or a normal thin and crispy pizza, mum?"

Although I would be the last to defend the Labour government's policies on some aspects of civil liberties, the above statement is wrong in relation to the Labour government's position on the plans apparently being introduced by the coalition.

To help you understand what went on, read the section entitled IMP (Internet Modernisation Programme) 2006-2010 in the link below. In short, first, plans for a centralised government database were dropped by Labour and then the idea of extending the role of ISPs in storing data and making it available was also dropped after a consultation led to the view that from a cost, security, feasibility and morality point of view, the idea was a non-starter with the vast majority of people consulted.

I remember writing that I didn't believe it was in the nature of the Tories to feel the need to spy on everyone, I was wrong. It is now evident that both the Tories and New Labour are hellbent on creating a surveillance police state and whats worse is that they are both liars and cheats. So even if New labour promise to dismantle these new powers, they wont!
