Must Middle Eastern male dominated societies always be ruled by a tyrant? I see that rival factions, ie tribes, are now enjoying running around in Toyota pick up trucks and killing eachother in Libya. Do the peoples of these countries simply love killing eachother too much to embrace democracy? Will they simply find themselves being ruled by yet another murdering, crooked, despot and then start bleating to the West to come and save them?

Re: Libya- Here we go again
Didn't you just know that once they'd turfed Gaddafi out they'd all just turn on each other?
My worry is that the country will go all Taliban, as ordinary people turn in deperation to the Islamists to impose some sort of "stability", at which point the women will be made to wear burkhas and stay indoors, and Sharia law wil be imposed with a few public beheadings and amputations to concentrate people's minds.
It's all so predictable.

Re: Libya- Here we go again
The big problem is that just because we in the "west" embrace "democracy" doesn't mean others do, and the sooner we stop marching into other countries imposing our ways on them the better.
Most of the countries in Africa have national boundaries that have nothing whatsoever to do with the old tribal boundaries (to some extent the same is true of Europe) but instead were imposed by the old European colonial powers. The map of Africa is not much different today from that laid out by the Berlin Conference of 1884/85.
When you have unnatural boundaries imposed, with warring tribes of different viewpoints and cultures all thrown into one mix, what do you really expect to happen? Then add the anomalies that you see in countries such as Togo... a long thin strip of land with a very short coast. All the economic strength of that country is to be found along it's coast, but two hundred or more miles inland and there is nothing but poverty. Little wonder that tribes in Africa are always fighting amongst themselves, as few have the land that is historically theirs and others, more powerful than them, control what "territory" was assigned them hundreds of years ago by their white rulers.

Re: Libya- Male dominated societies
I was wondering if whether male dominated societies by their very nature are predisposed towards violence as a matter of course? I am also curious as to whether the denial of sexual imagery in any form and the prohibition and control of sex also fuels this desire for murder and mayhem?
Could it be that us purveyors of porn do a great service to one and all by keeping the testostorone of the nation in check? It has been shown that the more sexually permissive a society is, the more peaceful it is, so shouldn't we be exporting porn to the Middle East instead of democracy? Shouldn't NATO be beaming hard core muck into these countries and in so doing bring them to their knees? (No pun intended) !wink!

You may well be right... although that doesn't explain the USA which probably produces more porn than anywhere, consumes more porn than anywhere yet has a citizenry that will happily pull a gun on other people and kill them at the smallest perceived slight, and a government fond of bombing other countries
