I get an annual prescription, hundred odd quid, covers everything, which is good as i'm on 8 pills every day.

Keeps me with a steady pulse! Sky high blood pressure with no obvious cause, and an enlarged heart.

Went to the doctor with slight blurred vision in one eye, ended up being made an emergency admission with a swollen brain. Been popping 8 a day ever since.

Only in England.

There are no Prescription Charges in Scotland, Wales or NI.

Makes you proud to be English doesn't it?

Spider, the reason there appear to be charges in England but not elsewhere in the UK is because the devolved parliaments/assemblies pay the equivalent costs centrally rather than individuals paying them at point of collection.

These other countries have decided to allocate their budgets in this way, whereas England has opted to continue with the more traditional model. (Also, as an aside, a huge number of people get/got prescriptions for free anyway).

There was no such thing as prescription charges when the NHS was established in 1948.

Surely the traditional model would be no NATIONAL Health Service prescription charges for anyone in the United Kingdom.

Thanks, although through all of it, the blood pressure, heart and brain things, I've never actually felt ill for one second, even the month I was hospitalised I felt my usual self, and so was a very awkward patient! (self employment and a month in hospital, when you feel fine, do not mix very well!)
