Francis Maude

Post by andy at handiwork »

Though it was stupid to decant petrol in her kitchen, Maude, well known for being both arrogant and a dim-wit, must take some responsibility surely.

I don't see how it's any different than what you would say to your mate. There is the possibility of a petrol strike (this involves just 2000 people bringing the other 62million to a grinding halt), it's just the kind of thing people would do anyway, "get yourself a couple of jerry cans mate and fill em up, just in case"
He is a twat, but not for saying what he said in my opinion. Is it any worse than Brown promising "British jobs for British workers?

Actually I do think 'Fill up some jerrycans and keep them at home' is a lot worse than 'British jobs for British workers'. I dont recall anyone being hospitalised by Brown's statement.

If this is what happens when there's just a rumour of a tanker driver strike, what's going to happen when the oils runs out completely?

The women that got hospitalised got that way because she attempted to fill containers of petrol in her kitchen, whilst the cooker was on. Would you do that?

You are correct, Andy

British jobs for British workers was a stupid slogan from Brown, mainly because it was meaningless. Brown had no way of stopping EU mainland workers from taking "British jobs".

Having said that the advice of Francis Maude and other Tory cabinet ministers did put people's lives at risk. As many motorist organisations and petrol station owners have pointed out that this has created panic buying. Saying "top-up" your tank when it gets to three quarters full was not possible without endless queueing in the vast majority of cases. It is a simple supply and demand issue.

As a result of this dumb advice, people have been queueing dangerously on dual carriageways with people flying past them in adjacent lanes etc to the point that police chiefs had to step in some counties and order the forecourts to be closed because of the danger. Maude's advice on jerry cans was also dumb and we have seen what can happen today.

Admittedly, the Tories cannot stop people behaving stupidly but if they had not tried to stir all of this up, it is debatable, given there is no strke date, whether this panic would have occurred.

If a mate says the same, so what? Your mate hasn't got an audience of about 50 million.

Bang to rights?

Post by andy at handiwork »

As the capacity of a standard 'jerrycan' is 19 litres and the legal limit in a single container stored in unlicensed premises, such as one's kitchen or garage, is 10 litres, could a case not be made to prosecute Maude for incitement to commit an offence under the relevant petroleum legislation?

Yes. It is also worth pointing out that as part of the interview with the BBC he said that the Unite union which has not called a strike, would be "risking lives" by going on strike"

Last weekend the media were all talking about Tory Millionaires willing to donate in exchange for Cameron favours.

The Tories have effectively distracted attention away from this with the absurd tanker fuel strike by a union which funds the labour party. They did their job well.

Just shows the Consevatives don't give a toss about the British people or the economy. Also shows how crap Milliband is for falling for it!

"The Tories have effectively distracted attention away from this with the absurd tanker fuel strike by a union which funds the labour party. They did their job well. "

No they did not do their job well. Correct that they tried to divert attention away from earlier events but only succeeded in shooting themselves in the foot yet again as they were condemned alround for incompetence.

So here we have it.

1. Budget which gets lambasted in Tory and Labour papers.
2. Re-toxification of the Tory brand as they give millionaires a handout equivalent to the price of a Porsche whilst having a raid on "grannies".
3. Peter Cruddas, that well know dodgy dealer, humiliates the Tories by trying to flog dinners with Dave and Sam Cam for 250K
4. Pastiegate where the Tories show again their incompetence by wading into the whole topic of cold, ambient, hot pasties etc which successive governments have steered clear of.
5. Francis Maude makes a huge cockup and then goes into hiding. We may see him come out for air, late April or early May.

Hardly "they did their job well" And you can bet that Miliband et al will bang on about all of the above points at every available opportunity, just as Miliband has gone on about the Lansley bill at every opportunity.

"Just shows the Consevatives don't give a toss about the British people or the economy".

I do think they care about the economy. It is just that they are completely incompetent.

"Also shows how crap Milliband is for falling for it"

No it doesnt. He is going on about the petrol issue because it is this week's unbelievable Tory cockup and it is obviously in people's mind as they spend forever on the forecourt. WHen this cockup has passed away they will revert to the points above to remind people. When the NHS starts falling apart, they will revert to the Lansley bill.
