As yet another Chelsea manager bites the dust, the question comes to mind,

Would Chelsea have been more successful or not, if instead of Abramovich taking over and spending squillions but getting rid of managers at a fast rate, Chelsea had had an owner prepared to let the manager build the team on less owner dosh?

I seem to recall that although they didnt win the Premier League under Vialli as manager, CHelsea did win FA Cup, League Cup, EUFA Cup, Charity SHield etc etc.

I think if you look at who has won what their is no proven formula for sustained success but there are plenty of ways that dont work

Buying in copious amounts of mercenaries who will all disappear when the money runs out

ManCity might be leading the EPL but where are they in Europe

Look at Real Madrid late 90s early 00s...winning everything but the arrogant fool who ran it thought anyone could make the team perform so he sacked Managers who had won everything.

As to Chelsea I think I agree with Alan Pardew

The big name stars who have under perfroormed are to blame and will no doubt be a thorn in the side of Di Matteo unless they get their way.

Agreed. Abramovich wants to start with himself to work out why Chelsea haven't sustained the success under Mourinho. Ancelotti, Vilas Boas, Hiddink etc have all got good track records with lesser teams on paper.

Agreed. After looking at himself he wants to look at the performances of the "star" players in his team who seem to think they are more important than the club.

As has been widely reported in the media already, Mr Abramovich told the players on Sunday what he thinks of their performances this season.

There have been reports, rightly or wrongly, of player power at Chelsea over a number of years, not just this year, making it difficult for any manager.

Whilst managers have been dumped off the roundabout with stunning regularity, I do not believe that the same has happened to "star" players.

Perhaps if Abramovich had had the following

a few months earlier, he might not have been in the position at the weekend where he felt he had to get rid of yet another manager.

Yes Gullitt & Vialli dragged Chelsea up from cup winners cup specialists to a reasonable outfit

Seem to recall Gullitt had the team dressing in suits to show they were professional....given some of the crazy gang from wimbledon came over

Players like Zola & Di Matteo werent short of skill but they got no higher than 6th before the Russian took over from memory

The curious thing Ranieri in the first year with the big money to spend got the sack.Probably justified given what Mourinho did but the amount of money he went through to have a team full of talent playing counter attacking defensive football was mind boggling.

That he never reached the champions league final playing this way should have told him he didnt have the right defensive personnel in his squad
instead of buying in more strikers every season.

Very reminiscent of real madrid again...couldnt defend to save their lives in Europe but kept buying the best attacking players.

Your memory is poor.

Chelsea finished 4th the season before Mr Abramovich bought the club.

Interesting. I wonder if his relationship with faith healer, Eileen Drewery is still on the go? If so, she could lay hands on the disabled people Glenn insulted way back.
