I do wonder whether these public sector workers who are striking ever consider that people in the private sector do not have guaranteed pensions, while the public sector lot do, and that the private sector people have a lot less job security that those in the public sector. I wonder if these Guardian reading left-wing radicals ever consider those things. I doubt it.
I worked for the Civil Service for years and it is very cushy compared to the private sector - where I have also worked for years, so I can compare the two. The pay is slightly lower than that of the private sector, but you do MUCH less work, have a lot more job security and have a non contributory and GUARANTEED pension - unlike the people who work in the private sector. Teachers are wonderful people but have it easier too - no one can say that 16 weeks annual holiday is anything other than a VERY good deal.

But David, I can sense that even you are asking yourself why you are sobbing uncontrollably for the public sector. It's only because as a New Labour supporter, you MUST support the public sector AT ALL COSTS, it is written in stone.
If New Labour had created a "National Federation of Clowns and Puppetteers" which had absolutely no purpose other than to swallow up ?Millions and this group was under threat, you would HAVE to support it regardless. if there was a department costing millions called the, "Lesbian & Gay Mission to Mars Programme", you would chain yourself to the railings at Parliament to protect it from the Tories why? But there are millions of other workers and businesses, who you don't seem to care a damn about. i think you said, "Get 'em to join a union or somthink" I'd like to see some concern for people in the private sector who are on the edge of an abyss.People who haven't got gold plated pensions, people who will never be able to retire. People who having worked all their lives and try and get some benefits are met with, "How dare you, ask for benefits, go and sell your house, benefits are not for the likes of you, you're a WORKER YOU ARE SCUM! Call security and have this man ejected! Next applicant please, "Oh hello sir, you have put down, "Professional Layabout" as your chosen job, please got to the door marked, "JACKPOT", where you will be well taken care of! next please........!"
There are millions in this country who work hard and have no protection and they must be seething with rage at the bare faced cheek of the "Pampered ones" as they march, so they can screw even more money our of the rest of us!

"Day off to exercise a democratic right to strike in protest at having to work longer, pay more money and receive less pension at a time when you have had real terms pay cuts for a number of years and live in fear of losing your job - very bad reason for hitting output."

All I've time to add now is from Jim and Max's comments I'm not the only one looking at it the viewpoint of employees in the private sector and the self-employed.
I'm not disputing the public sector workers have had changes to their pension, pay freezes and now 1% pay increases for the next two years etc.
However overall I'll be surprised come retirement if their pensions are still not good relative to those in the private sector who have seen the real value of their pension funds and other investments plummet.
As to private sector wage rises next year sadly there will be those e.g. fat cat bankers who rises will probably distort the average figures but I suspect the majority of employees wage rises will be 0 to 2.5% so falling behind inflation while due to supply and demand many self-employed will have to hold prices to keep getting business despite the ever increasing costs of purchases and overheads.
