So adored by the British media that Colin Myler, the editor of the News of the World, phoned and berated them for not giving an interview to NOW on the first anniversary of their daughter's disappearance.

So adored by the British media that the McCanns got endless hounding by photographers wanting exclusive pics.

Yeah, right Jim, the McCanns are really, really adored by the British media.

Mistakes are spending the rent money, having an affair, robbing a bank but leaving young kids alone while they went out was the biggest sin you can do.
As a responsible parent i was shocked when i first heard the news & sadly they paid the highest price any parent could, as sad as it was though they never once faced charges of child neglect & social workers never interfered in their affairs as they would have normally done if they lived in a poorer area (post codes tell it all).
I feel really sorry for the missing child & for the others left in the McCanns care & i do hope they have now learnt better parenting skills because of their previous mishaps.

BeestonBoy its not to easy to forgive someone when they done a serious mistake like leaving 2 very kids alone & losing one of them because of that neglect, i don't think they should then profit from their neglect (its like profiting from a crime they caused) & yes as much as they have been hounded by the press they have also welcomed it at times.
There will be strong feelings against the McCanns by both sides because parents are distressed by their early mishap & to see them then profit from this will send out the wrong message to other bad parents.
Yes they paid the ultimate price any parent could for their fuck up but to award them damages is like rewarding Ronnie Biggs who also got hounded by the press.
If they gave that money to a charity involved in looking for lost people the world might think different of them but i can't see them doing this...can you.

Quite agree. By the same logic, I have never heard of a middle class person being charged with drunk and disorderly, rape, assault or murder. It just doesn't happen in this country. Though in a poorer area it happens all the time. I am sure you agree.

Some might call this sanctimonious, self-righteousness, I couldn't possibly comment. The McCann's decision to put their kids to bed and for they and their friends to pop back every 20 minutes or so to check on them from where they were eating 120 metres away, was a tragic mistake which they'll no doubt regret for the rest of their lives.

Many people have done this - left kids asleep somewhere, in bed while they pop next door to have a quick word with the neighbours, in the back of the car while they nip into a shop etc. etc. Tragically the McCanns got caught out.

I suggest you do some research before spouting off. For a start it takes seconds to snatch a child from anywhere. What parent has not let a child out of their sight for a minute? many children get snatched all over the world, or worse, they run into the road and get killed by a car, it just takes a second, think about it. On the subject of the McCanns, they are ordinary people who have suffered a great loss, you could argue an element of it was partly their fault, but they didn't for one minute expect anyone to snatch thieir child, whilst they were eating only a few yards away. ANYONE could make that mistake.
Secondly, read this I don't think anyone could try harder to find out what happened to their child than these two, so get your hand in your pocket and donate, instead of castigating them for something that could, and does happen to people every day.

To argue that the McCanns "caused a crime" of abduction by leaving their kids for 20 min slots is a bit like accusing girls who wear short skirts on a Friday night of "causing a crime" of rape. Or a lippy schoolkid caused a crime of being knifed by someone.

You are obviously totally confused about the detail of this case.

1. The McCanns were on the receiving end of over 100 libellous articles in Express Newspapers i.e. printing lies.

2. Express Newspapers accepted liability and paid compensation for their crime.

3. THe McCanns put the money they received towards the find Madeleine campaign.

4. Unlike Biggs, the McCanns have not been found guilty of any crime.
