I actually wholly agree with you Frank. I do have experience of the low level of driving skills in Eastern Europe and, yes, Budapest is as bad as anywhere. Nevertheless, I still believe that if the UK driving test was more relavant to modern motoring conditions, instead of worrying about daft manoeuvrves like three point turns, our motorways would be much safer.

The 70 mph limit was introduced in the mid 60s, when the average car struggled even to reach 70. A tubo diesel family saloon now has much better performance than a sports car back then, with brakes and other safety features improved out of all proportion.

As to foreign driving, check out Ice Road Truckers on Channel 5, where the Alaskan truckers are trying out truck driving in India. The standard of driving is unbelievably bad: buses overtaking lorries on blind bends on roads with a 7000 foot sheer drop inches away! We don't know we're born!

From personal experience I tend to agree that stupid driving rather than speed cause car accidents.

Try living in Amsterdam or Budapest or London and you will see cyclists now running amok without a care in the world. They care not for traffic lights, people nor the rules of the road.

I believe cycles should have to display a registration number, be insured and be liable to prosecution as would any reckless or law breaking motorist.

They are a menace and should be dealt with. this has NOTHING to do with Clarkson, he is an arse-hole. This is from watching the behaviour of these lycra clad sods. It is possible to form one's own hatred of cyclists without any help from Clarkson!

I'm not the only one, here's a Guardian article on a similar vein:

Right on Jimbo ! What a great Guardian article. I am astonished such a
newspaper, one I always associated with liberal lefties and exactly the
kind of twats who put on the lycra and crash helmets and look as if they
are going to war when they step onto the pedals at breakneck speed,
should publish it. Good on them !
Walkers need to re-gain the pavements and parks, to feel we can toddle
along happily without some bloody fool weaving past like a rocket and
almost always cycling along any path and route that suits him. They are,
in my experience, also a danger to cars in traffic.

And don't forget mobility scooters. Worse than Clarkson in a Bugatti, them mobility scooters. Old age pensioner chapter of the Hells Angels I call them.

And what about kids on trikes? More dangerous than a Porsche, they are.

Right, I'm glad I've got that off my chest.

Good nite. Now where did I put my camphor oil. I always like to rub it into my chest last thing, before I read a chapter.

To be fair, my point about Clarkson being a twat was about speed/death and cyclists were a side order. Now they've become the main course!

You must have done a bit of Googling to dig up that 9+ year old article! But I have no argument with cyclists who are a danger to others abiding by the law laws as other motorists.

Remember to stay away from Clarkson. Never trust anyone from Doncaster.

Your belief that the speed limit in Richmond Park was reduced to 20mph because of the deer is tosh.

The plan is to eventually close Richmond Park to all car traffic and only allow crazed cyclists to run amok, unchecked.

In future pedestrians will be made to keep to the cycle track that was made all around the park and paid for at great expense by us the local residents, a track no cyclist ever uses......

Why? Because the wankers demand exclusive use of the road. Now you get the perverse image of motorists, crawling along, being overtaken at speed by Lycra clad madmen, bring terror to hapless pedestrians wishing to enjoy a day out in the park.

Personally, I think Richmond park should be closed to cars at the weekends. However I also believe the roads should be left empty for pedestrians to enjoy and cyclists made to stick to their paths. They should face heavy fines and possible incarceration for breaking this rule. Even better would be vigilante squads of walkers shoving sticks through their wheels! Lol

BTW I made up all of this all by myself, in my own little head and didn't read anything by Jeremy Clarkson!

PS Sam, I see that you have been attending the David Johnson school of "Thread dissection" when replying to posts. I think you can look forward to a "Pass with Distinction" from DJ in the near future! If you look above, I have taken the liberty of pre-dissecting my post for your convenience, all you need do now is copy and paste and simply fill in the gaps!wink!

Hope this helps!

Surely, Mr. Slater invented "thread dissection?" Either Mr Slater or Aristotle, I can't remember which.
