It seems like the Ordinary working greek man and woman will be allowed to have a say on the Bailout offered by the Euro Masters, how awful, Imagine giving the 'real' people a say on 'thier' own future, whatever next, I'm glad we don't allow that sort of thing in blighty, imagine the chaos if our Politicians actually listened to the citizen, we would really be in the shit. Thank god for all those unelected European beurocrats that decide our future, we would be fucked without them.

I don't think this has got anything to do with a desire to allow the electorate a say on the bailout, more of a "well okay, guys and gals, we, the government have had enough of the rioting/striking etc. on your head be it"

The Greek government hasn't shown any desire over the last year or two to give the Greek people a say on the austerity measures.

I would imagine that we will be back in sell, sell, sell territory on the FTSE tomorrow and that this will go down like the proverbial cup of cold sick with Merkel, Sarkozy - "Jeez we offer a deal to these Greek guys which involves writing off 50% of their debt and a load of money to bolster up their banking system in return for some austerity measures and what do these guys do? Announce a referendum, who knows when!"

This seems like Papandreou's last throw of the dice. Greece has become largely ungovernable with multi-day national strikes following on from regular infrastructure strikes etc. Apparently the Finance Minister couldnt get into the Finance Department for 3 weeks because it was blockaded by the workers in that department. The riots are continuing on the streets and the economy continues to dive.

So Papandreou is more or less saying - over to you guys, if you want us out of the EU then vote against the motion in the referendum - on your head be it.

Apparently the Interior Minister stated that the referendum won't be until January. I can't see who would want to lend money to Greece in Euroland in the interim on the basis that they have no idea if any of the measures which they thought had been agreed to, are going to be supported by the electorate in January.

Chaos reigns.

Shouldn't it be the people of the other EU countries who should be given a vote as to whether Greece should be booted out of the EU? After all it is these poor sods who are, through their taxes, propping up the top heavy bunch of squanderers!

It's a bit like some, "Neighbours from Hell" having a vote as to whether to accept gifts and peace offerings from their peaceful neighbours.

To use the vernacular, it all seems to be kicking off.

In Greece, the Prime Minister Papandreou announced a referendum apparently without telling his Cabinet. THe Finance Minister didn't know and he is now in hospital with stomach pains. Who can blame him?

Stories that the Defence Minister has sacked some senior generals in the army in case they start getting uppity. People have left Papandreou's party over the issue and it is uncertain whether he will get the support needed in parliament to have a referendum.

Sarkozy, Merkel and the other European leaders who worked through the night to sort out a Europe-wide bailout package including writing off 50% of Greece's debt are spitting feathers because they had hoped the deal agreed by all the Euro leaders would last longer than 5 days.

Italy and Spain are finding it more and more expensive to borrow money as a result of the crash in Euroland in bank stocks and shares resulting from the latest gift from "greeks bearing grudges!. And all this might have a negative effect on our thrusting economy 0 .6% growth this year.

Why prolong the agony any longer...kick the bloody Greeks out. Europe
and the world generally can handle their default (it survived when
Argentina defaulted on its debt after decades of being linked with the
US dollar) and let them float a new drachma. You may hate the euro but
it is not going to go away any more than the EEC is....so cut out the dead
wood now before it infects more branches.

Still think Greece would be better outside the Euro and starting again. A cheap currency would attract millions of tourists.
