Life isn't all bad then!
Name one famous Swiss author, playwright, artist, sculptor, musician, poet etc etc
Exactly. Culturally, Switzerland is like every day is a Sunday in November.
But you do a good line in cuckoo clocks, overpriced watches and banks that would allow Hitler to open an account with them if he were still alive!

Or to quote a great man
'Don't be so gloomy. After all it's not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.'
Ah times like this I wished me could talk pretty one day too

Indeed
Great book also but far from Greene's best imho
Trust Orson Welles to write the best scene in him self. For him self of course. Perhaps the cinemas greatest ever show off.

Re: "We will never be Switzerland"
I saw a great documentary about the making of The Third Man.
There are scenes where Harry Lime is running about in the sewer where you don't see the character just his shadow on the wall.
The Director (Carol Reed) was forced to get someone to dress up as Harry lime and run about and then just film the shadows because Orson Welles didn't turn-up for filming half the time.
Orson only took the part for the money which he needed to finance a film he was making (Othello I think).
I think the documentary is one of the Extra on The Third Man DVD I have.
Great film.
