Not all British laws bad
I read that riding a bicycle on the pavement is now illegal more or less
everywhere in Britain. I wish to God we had the same attitude in
Budapest where I spend much of my time ! There now seems more
pedalling maniacs on the pavements than walkers in a city that has
gone pedal-power crazy in last five years. I have a recurring nightmare
that one day I will be ambling along a pavement, having a decent
argument with Jim Slip, and the two of us will be crushed beneath the
wheels of one of these velocipede lunatics doing ninety. And the bastards
wear crash helmets too so they are all right. Never mind the sodding
pedestrians !

Hi Frank,
It may now be illegal to ride your bike on the pavement, in the UK,
but just like the people who use a mobile whilst driving, which is equally illegal, most of them seem to be ignoring the law thus far.
So I wouldn't rush back here just yet, expecting a pavement free of cycling assassins. Nothing that a broom handle through the spokes couldn't cure.

Maybe the cyclists ride on the pavement in Budapest because the drivers on the road are maniacs!

I always cycle on the pavement until I get to the nearest cycle path.
A lot of those car drivers are maniacs, don't you know.
I do take care however, not to slaughter pedestrians.
Nor do I wear lycra.

Quite correct though, not all British laws are bad e.g.
'It is illegal for a cab, in the City of London, to carry rabid dogs or corpses.'
That's just sensible.
It's also illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament.
To be honest, I could take or leave that one.

I nailed some twatt riding on the pavement a few weeks ago by elbowing him in the ear as he went past and down like a sack of shit. I'm a 6 footer and well built. The twatt decided not to get up until I was well away.
As far as I'm concerned that is the only way to treat these twatts riding on the pavement. If the car drivers scare you then fucking well get a car or walk.

As laws go, common assault is a good one. Grievous bodily harm has its supporters too.
Cheers

Yes Bill, these fucking, "Lycra Louts" should be rounded up and locked up! What you forgot to mention is how these bastards have a total disregard for traffic lights and pedestrians crossing the road. I say make the bastards have Reg Plates on their bikes, have insurance AND BAN LYCRA!
By the way, I belive that there is a "I hate cyclists" Facebook page!

I call it self defence if some idiot nearly runs me down on a pedestrian pavement.

An unrepealed section of the Offences against the person Act, 1861 Section 35 allows a court to impose a 2 year prison sentence on anyone who causes bodily harm to another by furious riding!
