Should the Carnival go ahead?

Post by max_tranmere »

Following the recent riots in London and other cities there has been some debate about whether the Notting Hill Carnival should go ahead. It is Europe's biggest street festival and is taking place tomorrow (Sunday) and the day after (Monday). The Met are laying on more Police than at anytime in the Carnival's history for this forthcoming event and I hope nothing out of the ordinary occurs. Is anyone else on here going, and are you a bit nervous that a riot or some large scale inter-gang violence may occur? Me and my friend are going (we go every year) and are not overly worried but are going to be a bit more cautious than we have been during previous times.

(this is my first post for a couple of weeks as I've been on holiday).

A large scale gathering in London, that requires Policing, could turn into trouble in the wake of the recent riots. The Police have apparently raided the properties of known trouble-makers over recent days who have apparently been nicked at the Carnival before and have confiscated weapons. London seems to have been very on-edge recently and a mass get together like this could be viewed by some as an ideal place to start some trouble. I hope nothing happens.

I remember they cancelled one or two football matches in the aftermath of the riots, I'm not sure if that was down to Police resources being streched or if they thought that any mass gatherings in London following the riots had the potential to become problematic. I hope the Carnvial goes off ok, it would be a shame if it doesn't because most people who go do so in order to have a good time.

Cancelling it would only cause a large scale riot of people who wanted to go be told you cant have it as punishment for the riots

I'd join them on the frontline for that....With my camera and get interviews as well

Oh and play NWAs Fuck Tha Police on one of them trucks driving through the streets too !laugh!

Not that I have a problem with the police but I will if they start shit!
