DON'T! lol

My last one was a 911SC, 1987 and the nicest one I had was a jet black 1970's 911S. The problem with all old Porsches is that some idiot has almost certainly been buggering about with it at some point in its life, so you don't know what problems are lurking under the bonnet. Also the chances are that the heat exchangers are buggered and rot has set in to the body somewhere. The bodies were galvanised at this time so it helps a little.

My advice is be prepared to start seeing your bank account emptied, slowly but surely. Be prepared to see "Specialist' mechanics rubbing their hands with glee when they see you lurching onto their forecourt, your car coughing and spluttering to a stop!

Ideally you'd look for a car with a full Porsche service history and one or two owners, however, this is more or less impossible.

Whatever you do, try and get a Porsche mechanic to give the car a once over before you part with your money. Maybe you can find a fully restored one, but i reckon this would set you back around ?15,000. Bare in mind that the Classic car market has collapsed so there are some bargains out there if you look.

Good luck!

Cheers Jim

The site I have been looking is

There looks like some good models around the 12 to 20k area, idealy I would have liked the Cabriolet version.

I would only be looking for a weekend car and, typical of a 1980's lad, in guards red !!!

Again thanks for the quick comments ...you not "working today"?!wink!

Best advice I was given when I considered treating myself to a well used BMW 330 Coupe was "could you afford to buy it new?", if not you can't afford to run an old one as the repairs could cripple you. Or as my late father said"if it's got tits or wheels it will give you grief and cost you money"...he was damn right on both counts!!
