Its the same in this country to be honest. Apart from Ken Loach who else makes gritty "real" films. You could argue Mike Leigh,but he seems to have lost his touch and seems to make fluffy,lightweight(dare i say it snobby) films these days. I think the 70's was the golden age for film on both sides of the atlantic,also on tv,where is the play for today of this generation,when you were guaranteed quality drama. It is all about viewing figures.
