Brooks arrest

Post by andy at handiwork »

Something very fishy about the Met arresting Brooks two days before she's due to appear in front of a Parliamentary Committee. She will now be unable to answer any questions. News management by the police trying to deflect a bit of flak. I wonder if it might be considered a contempt of Parliament by Stevenson.

Agreed. It was way back in 2003 that Rebekah Brooks admitted in front of a parliamentary committee that "we have paid police for information".

8 years later and 2 days before an appearance at another parliamentary committee she gets arrested. This presumably puts a lot of stuff sub judice and therefore problemantic for the committee to ask questions.

After 8 years of doing close to bugger all, would an extra 3 days have made any difference? I don't think so. If Coulson's arrest is anything to go by, what usually happens is that they are bailed until the autumn.

If the same happens to James Murdoch and/or Rupert tomorrow, then we know that this is likely to be a cover-up to knock it into the long grass until autumn. Out of public sight, out of public mind.

Cheers

I think this illustrates why the judge in Manchester recently found that the police were misusing their powers of arrest and bail, though the government, with typical failure to think things through, immediately rushed through a bill to regularise this malpractice. The Police and Criminal Evidence Act in effect says that the police have 96 hours after arresting someone to charge or release them.

Now, the police arrest Rebekah Wade and then after 12 hours, bail her till October, stopping the PACE clock. She is under a cloud for thre months, maybe longer, and obviously will tell the parliamentary committee jack shit. The idea of PACE is that if the police arrest someone they have four days to charge them, not four months. An arrest should come when the police have an idea of the case they are going to put to someone, not the start of an open ended fishing expedition.
