Thanks everyone...
Thanks for all your helpful comments. Like I said I am not a particularly unhappy person but my mind just seems to want to bring me down - and for certain periods each day it does. Cheers folks, I will make an appointment to see my GP.
Re: Thanks everyone...
I would recommend reading 'How to stop worrying and start living' by Dale Carnegie, author of 'how to win friends and influence people'.

Hi Max
Good Luck with this.
All I would say is that GPs are under pressure from people who are suffering with depression/anxiety to come up with a quick fix, particularly in a recession like this one - people with money worries etc. As far as I am aware a lot of GPs, in the absence of quickly available alternatives like counselling, are doling out prescriptions for anti-depressants.
I am sure anti-depressants have a role to play in many cases. I have never taken anti-depressants myself but I have known a number of people who have and a lot of them say it is easy to get on them, courtesy of their GP, but difficult to get off them, due to a physical and emotional dependency developing.
It might be worthwhile trying the non-drug approach e.g. physical exercise etc, counselling first to see if that does the trick, before going with anti-depressants if offered?
Either way, all the best.

Re: Beating anxiety...
The symptoms you describe are not anxiety, anxiety is worrying about the future, not getting wound up about the past.
Re: Beating anxiety...
I wouldn't agree with that BRFOT - surely anxiety is a feeling and a state of mind & body - what causes it is secondary to the condition
Re: Beating anxiety...
Anxiety is rooted in stress and worry about and its symptoms are panic, fear etc
"a future-oriented mood state in which one is ready or prepared to attempt to cope with upcoming negative events"
I am not sure wanting to punch a wall due to past events is anything to do with anxiety, seems like the exact opposite, sounds like being angry about something, possibly with good reason.
Of course Max has not told us what in the past makes him want to punch a wall now, but its hardly an anxious reaction imo, I suppose other amateur doctors on here will want to offer different advice on the basis of a 2 paragraph explanation, go for it.
