Blimey! Everyone seems to be focusing a lot on my comment about the catering. Oh well.

As far as the kind of people who go into it, I think traditionally the reason why a lot of messed up people ended up in porn was because they felt validated and worthy when doing it. A girl whose dad never loved her and who was neglected as a kid suddenly found that when her curves and her boobs appeared when she was a teen all of a sudden people started to notice her. She, sadly, now viewed herself as having something that people would gravitate towards her for - when everyone had ignored her on every level before. Taking that to the max, she ends up in porn. It is sad really.

You appeared to 'critique' the film based on the fact its portrayal appears divorced from a C4 doc.

Thats probably not the best modus operandi for arts criticism.

All other anecdotal observations posted appear to suggest BN's 'broad brush' appraisal of US seventies porn is, larely, accurate (given some artistic licence)

Nobody is saying you're incorrect. The majority are, however, suggesting your critique is skewed.

who's famous slogan is, "It takes 15 years to become an overnight sensation." The world is full or sad people AND happy people. This goes for the porn industry as well.In general, I'd have to say that over the last 15 years I've generally found porn people to be, "Happy" fun people.

No doubt some will say, "Oh, there just wearing a painted smile, behind the laughter there are the tears of sadness and woe. They hate every second of porn and long to be holding down a job in trainee management in Wilkinsons!"!wink!

I recall a couple of large budget jobs I shot in the 00s where the catering was fantastic. Better than the scripts, thats for sure. As for Boogie Nights, I think its one of the best films of its decade.

A great film, but perhaps best seen as part of a body of work by its maker, Paul Thomas Anderson, arguably the best American director we have at the moment. Damaged personalities and power clashes a recurring theme.

Usually the miseries of porn are usually the directors and togs making the cast slave away all day. I know one British sour puss director who screamed at me once, "Cast should bring their own bloody food, it's not my problem!" We've always got food in for cast etc, but very often they don't eat it. But at least it's there.
