Where has our dear Ed been for the last 14 years? In this speech he laments the plight of young people will never be able to afford to buy a house. Oh, I wonder why that is????
Don't I seem to remember New Labour crazily stoking up a property market already spiralling out of control? Allowing banks to lend recklessly to anyone and in so doing driving the market to an unsustainable level? These politicians make you sick to the stomach. At ANY TIME during their reign, New labour could have dampened the housing market by slapping Capital Gains tax of 40% on profits made from the sale within say 1- 3 years of purchase of ANY property. This would have crushed greedy speculators. Houses are for living in, they are not cash generators! At least this is what they think in the rest of Europe.
Could it be that NewLabour did nothing like this, because they were also raking in the cash benefits of a housing market out of control, with their own personal wheeling and dealing. Look at Blairs ?millions made during that time.
Politicians of all persuasions are always so humble and wise......in hindsight!!

More self-contradictory nonsense from Jimbo.

Is this the same Jimbo who bleats on and on about the New Labour nanny state and the restrictions on individuals' rights? Given rent in many parts of the country is higher than what people would have to pay on a mortgage, it makes no sense to drastically restrict mortgages. People still need a roof over their heads.

So now according to Jimbo, if you leave for another job after 3 years or relocate to be nearer relations, you should pay 40% tax on any profits you make.
The reasons why young people struggle/will struggle to buy their own house are as follows:
1. The vast majority of the banks are demanding huge deposits for their loans.
2. Young people have seen youth unemployment soar to 1 million.
3. Those jobs that have been created are almost exclusively part-time which would prevent young people getting a mortgage anyway.
4. EMA grants to stay on at school have been largely wiped out.
5. Student fees have been trebled in the vast majority of cases. Thus putting many off getting the education which might provide a way out of their money problems with a better job.
6. The economy is tanking with stagnant growth, deficit targets being missed and high inflation.
1. and 2. happened under both Labour and Tories. 3, 4, 5, 6 are directly the result of Tory led government actions.

I think you'll find he doesn't but then you would need to have a look at what he is saying instead of making tired assumptions of what he is saying.
One of the things I keep getting slagged off for by members of the party is for reminding most that while the economy is a huge problem politicians didn't tell you to get your mortgages that you can't pay for or your credit for other things and if you can't deal or manage your finances then you should be looking at yourself a bit more than looking for scapegoats for it.
The system was created but you were never told to use the fucking system.
