Well, first let's give the Gaddafi regime the benefit of the doubt and assume that Gaddafi's son and grandchildren have been killed.

If that is the truth then it was an inevitable step in the circumstances.

1. Cameron helps to engineer a UN resolution authorising a no fly zone and air action to protect civilians.
2. As expected this proves an unachievable objective as Misrata highlights.
3. Then Cameron and co. go into the "what do we do next to get the fuck out of here phase " as stalemate breaks out.
4. The decision is made that killing the bastard would be a good step to help speed the process along. Obviously Cameron cannot admit that the objective is to kill Gaddafi because that it is forbidden under the UN resolution, so he twitters on about the site being a command and control centre. Besides the rather dodgy Arab states that supported the resolution might get an attack of the jitters and become even more detached from the project than they already have done.
5. The only problem with the Cameron story is that it is a tad unlikely that an evil dictator would use himself and his family as a human shield for a command and control centre. Joe Public Yes. Dictator's family No.
6. Cameron hopes for better luck next time.
7. If he and the allies are successful he can do one of his attempts at statesman speeches "Having avoided a huge humanitarian disaster in Benghazi, an evil dictator has today been..... etc" There's lots of similar speeches from Blair that he can get edited. Word Search and replace is very useful, I find.
8. Once the evil dicator, Saddam Hussein, oops Gaddafi, (wrong war) has been dealt with, as we know those nice, democracy loving rebels in Eastern Libya will introduce a democratic regime. Won't they? Just like the Sunnis, Shias and Kurds did when Saddam Hussein was arrested.
9. And so it goes on.

Prince William gets married without any political incidents & what do Nato they take out part of a muslim royal family, Gaddafi has asked to be exiled & they say no...he then asked for a cease fire & they kill his son & grandkids? who exactly are the terrorists here ?
Next everyone will say its alright for Israel to keep committing genocide & stealing land just because they are backed by the US...terrorism comes in many fanatical Christian, Jewish & Muslim forms with each using their own propaganda to win brownie points.

Interesting points there. I feel that attacking a suburban house with non-combatants in it is seriously out of order as I said in the OP. They could have tried to wap Gaddafi at his office complex or when out on official duties. A cynical nasty act me thinks.

People seem willing to use any means necessary to 'off' someone they don't like. If normal shoots-outs are unlikley to work, then let's fire a missile at the dood. I remember when the Israeli's took out the leader of Hamas, who had been responsible for organising many suicide bombings. The old geezer, who was about 85 or 90, was emerging from a building in his wheelchiar, and rather like a scene from one of the Rambo films, a helipcopter gunship ascends from behind some buildings in the distance, and 'wham!' a missle is fired at the Hamas leader - killing him and many of his bodyguards. They apparently only found a hand afterwards and had to place the hand in a full sized coffin.

That's assuming that these grandkids of Gaddafi actually existed.

When the Yanks bombed Libya in 1986, it was announced that his "adopted daughter" had been killed.

Trouble was, this was the first that anyone (including many in Libya) had ever heard of any "adopted daughter". And not only that, her age was variously reported as being between anything from infant to early teenage.

But despite glaring inconsistencies like that, the Libyan propaganda machine was still able to sell the story because there were enough soft-headed hand-wringers in the West to buy into it for the myth to become firmly established. Lionel Ritchie even went over and performed a 20th anniversary "tribute" concert to this alleged "adopted daughter" at the bombed-out compound in Tripoli in 2006.

I'd also be willing to bet that those sceptics now accusing Obama of lying and demanding "absolute proof" that Bin Laden is dead are happy to simply accept at face value any claims made by Gaddafi's people about the "Brother Leader's" dead grandchildren.
