Given the vehemence of your response, I have obviously offended you, for which I apologise.
However, in my defence, if you read some of your own posts over the months, you may find that you, yourself, are not immune from the criticisms that you make of me. in your own dealings with various posters!
I'm not the only one on this forum that needs decking you know!

Re: Frank
The last military operation that I was involved in was the Dhofar war.We won that, but it was conducted out of view of the media! Our recent involvements in that area have not been good, beacuse there was no clear aim, just some woolly political posturing. Not a way to win wars.

Re: Sam
Err, no confusion on my part. I understand your point completely.
This is why I stated
"Okay in summary, you can't add anything in terms of suggestions as to what the UK should do - the original point of the thread."
using the word "add" in case there were any new ideas you had, not already expressed.
The original point of the thread was a general request for ideas. I gave one. It cannot be to add anything new because I'd not given my original opinion yet. Stop trying to worm your way out of it.
I'll summarize what you did with an analogy:
Sam: Blackpool are on the slide, arent' they? Can anyone add any ideas on how Holloway can keep them from going down?
Johnson: I'd go 4-3-3 with Adam just behind the striker.
Sam: I didn't think you'd have any ideas. Not a criticism.
Johnson: What!? I have just given you an idea!
Sam: Not really. I'm talking about adding any 'new' ideas.
Johnson: (obvious reply): How can you ask for any new ideas when you didn't even know my first idea yet? You're just being argumentative for the sake of it.
Sam: It's a shame you didn't catch my meaning. Ok, I didn't say it but here in Sheffield anyone with half a brain would have known instinctively what I meant. It must be all that salty air you breathe over there. And do you really have to reply to my posts? I find it so boring how when I post, you reply, then I reply, then you reply, then I reply.....and on it goes. Isn't it soooo repetitive and tedious, darling? I think I'll take a lye-down on the chaise.

Re: Sam- an apology
Given the vehemence of your response, I have obviously offended you, for which I apologise.
Not offended, David. Annoyed, maybe. You see, I don't know about Blackpool but over here we have different words for different emotions.*
However, in my defence,...
Here we go.....
..if you read some of your own posts over the months, you may find that you, yourself, are not immune from the criticisms that you make of me. in your own dealings with various posters!
Saying I do it too is not a defence. I did, however, admit to not being innocent in this if your read my reply. Maybe you didn't because it was a little long. I forget, you see, that here in Sheffield we have longer attention spans than folks on the north-west coast. I don't know if it's the salty air, over-abundance of donkey shit or something in the humbugs.
To be repetitive and not let you down I'll repeat what I said below:
"We all take chunks out of each other during heated arguments and I'm in no way innocent in this, but I do get a strong feeling you either plan to do just that or it comes so naturally to you you don't notice."
I mean, why point out something I've already pointed out? Jesus, David, this is so repetitive! *goes for another lye-down on chaise*
I'm not the only one on this forum that needs decking you know!
It's not the decking that's the issue, it's the anticipation and not knowing when it's going to come! After all this time waiting it better be good.
* 1-1
Oh, and apology accepted.

Blimey
And you call me arrogant!
Just to head off another Slaterism at the pass such as
"I never called you arrogant to be fair"
I am aware that you stated
"a general underlying theme of arrogance" which is not necessarily the same as saying someone is arrogant.
There, I have saved you some typing. Hopefully, though I wouldn't put my mortgage on it.

"Our recent involvements in that area have not been good, beacuse there was no clear aim, just some woolly political posturing. Not a way to win wars."
Agreed. The problem with the Libyan involvement is that the main aim expressed in the UN resolution is unachievable.
That main aim is to protect Libyan civilians by the air without a land invasion. The allies have stated they will stick to that main aim and any restrictions. This aim is unachievable and Misrata has shown that. Large civilian casualties have occurred in Libya's third city including according to UNICEF, many child casualties due to the close quarters nature of much of the fighting.
The only way long term that Libyan civilians may be protected is by regime change and even then we do not know how any government replacement will act However regime change is not allowed as a military option.
So in short it is a complete mess.
Cheers

Cheers for that. Excellent stuff
"It began to be obvious that getting rid of evil didn't always lead to the simple triumph of goodness".
Ya can say that again.
I remember the excellent series on the tele that Curtis made, The Power of Nightmares.
