When I was living in West Hollywood in the late 90s I met Mr Gough
and his wife in my local video store. I had been a fan of his performances,
especially in gems like the Hammer version of "The Phantom of the
Opera", that I could not resist shaking his hand and thanking him for
some splendid villains....He told me he had just arrived to make a new
movie though not as a bad guy. His role, as it turned out, was as the
butler in "Batman". Great voice, great sneer, great villain ! RIP.

I think you'll find that you mean late 1980s, not 90s. The Batman movie in which Michael Gough first played Alfred Pennyworth was released in 1989.
