Gaddafi

Post by David Johnson »

I seem to recall William Hague who said about a week ago that he had received information that Gaddafi was flying to Venezuela. Anybody seen him on holiday there?

Then on Monday, our Great Leader, Top Gun Cameron spoke out to let us know that he was working with our allies with regard to a no-fly zone over Libya.

Bloody hell, has this bloke been watching too many Blair speeches on Iraq? Has no-one warned him?

Meanwhile can I suggest that any kind forumite who has a spare functioning aircraft carrier, together with some war planes that can take off and land on said carrier, gets in touch with the Ministry of Defence pronto!

Thank you

"A week is a long time in politics."

Especially when your suggestions for a no-fly zone get described as "loose talk" by the Americans.

"Cant help with the flat-top I'm afraid."

Never thought of going for one of Osborne's Enterprise Zone loans? The Tories are determined to build an entrepreneurial society you know?

Infamy, infamy

Post by David Johnson »

They all have it infamy me.

Spare a thought for William Hague. He has had a hammering from the press over the last week or two over the slowness of the UK government response to get civilians out of Libya and the SAS shambles when a night landing went wrong. Even the slickness of the operation to get British people out of the desert oil locations doesn't seem to have helped him.

Worst of all, it would appear that the sabre rattling by the British government over a no-fly zone doesn't seem to have had the desired effect. Gaddafi looks to have been biding his time initially to see if the British threat actually materialised. When it didn't he has then proceeded to throw everything at the insurgents - tanks, aircraft, heavy artillery etc.

Nato states that a no-fly zone requires a UN resolution. The Russians are likely to have a veto. Obama doesn't look keen in getting involved on another front. I can't see Britain acting unilaterally after all the horrors of Iraq. So it looks like it is going to end in tragedy. The war could be over by the time, the UN gets anything together. Gaddafi stays in control. Britain and others become enemy numero uno for Gaddafi. Russia becomes friend numero uno and Iran gains a chum.

Its an extremely difficult situation but when you sell weapons to a lunatic, what should you expect?

The impact of a no-fly zone over Libya would be catastrophic!!! Ryan Air use Tripoli airport for their flights to Barcelona (just a short ferry trip and coach transfer required)

To be honest I forgot entirely about that.

It would also impact on tours to Leptis Magna and Tripoli.

As the website announces "A long weekend with a difference".

Plenty of late availability I would imagine.

Leptis and Sabratha are quite astonishing sites. Although not as important as the deaths of many people in the fighting, it would be a pity if the two sites were affected. The day 20 years ago that the small group I was in visited, they were both completely deserted.
