On a very, very, very rare occasion, Muslims get a bad press on this forum e.g. religious teachings from imams based on 7th century beliefs, refuse to integrate, have no interest in western way of life, will have become the most prominent group in a few decades based on birth rates, not like us at all, not interested in democracy and the rule of law, medieval beliefs etc. etc.
And yet I am sure Max, Davey et al. will join me in congratulating the overwhelmingly Muslim population in Tunisia and Egypt for standing up against dictators, who have ruled by fear and torture in order to have political freedom and a better life for themselves and their children.
Obviously it may all go pear-shaped with a possible permanent military government, but at least they have shown some guts to fight a government that has abused them for decades.
Maybe we could do with a lot more of those Muslims over here. Eh? Show us how to have some backbone.
!wink!

Muslims in Tunisia and Egypt
Re: Muslims in Tunisia and Egypt
You said very naively ,
"Maybe we could do with a lot more of those Muslims over here."
In your crazy, politically correct mind, you are considering a situation where we have a Muslim lead, or inspired ,rising of the masses against the evils of the Coalition. Grow up man!
Presumably you are talking about radical Muslims. Just to remind you, that you are posting on a porn forum. Porn being abhorrent to Islam and both participants (Including yourself) and producers of such could render themselves becoming victims of the most appalling punishment, from flogging to death. As far as the girls on this forum are concerned, they would be hung!
All outlets of porn would be brutally crushed. All your, "Right on" views from Gay rights to womens rights would end.
Your naivety BEGGARS BELIEF, your stupid talk is exactly what The Young Socialists preached when Iran overthrew its dictator the Shah and brought in the Ayatollah. Iran is now a brutal nasty, dictatorship ruled by clerics and a madman!
You are no more than a childish "idiot savant" of facts and figures. Your lack of grasp of political outcomes, beyond your narrow little Socialist view is breathtaking!

Forget New Layba David. How about you sign up with this this bunch? They sound like they could be right up your street, just the boys for you.
Because if (just for the sake of argument) things were to actually go the way you're suggesting, that's pretty much what we'd end up with.
It happened in Iran (a popular, broad-based revolution hijacked by a bunch of old bearded nutters in turbans), Afghanistan (the Taliban emerging from decades of internal chaos to take over) and it could still happen in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East.
But as in your lovely pink politically-correct eyes Muslims can apparently do no wrong (and anyone who thinks otherwise is quite clearly a racist / xenophobe / little Englander / "Daily Mail reader" etc. etc.) maybe you wouldn't have a problem with that.
Never heard the old saying "be careful what you wish for"?

Re: Muslims in Tunisia and Egypt
At times you talk utter wank. Do you want Sharia law in the UK? Do you want women to be second class citizens? Radical Islam is still the largest threat to world peace. Any sort of radical Islamic government in Egypt will get the Israelis mounting a pre emptive strike. Get real DJ.

Make no mistake, Mr "Right on" DJ, Below is the only thing standing between all of us on the BGAFD and a beheading!

Re: Muslims in Tunisia and Egypt
What's happening is fantastic, so far. I'm worried about the Muslim Brotherhood and what their influence will be when everything settles down. They will implement Sharia, "if it's the will of the people.", apparently. 90% of Egyptians are Sunni Muslim so we shall see if the majority are liberal and moderate enough to shun religious law.
Wishing more religious people into our nation, I think, is a bad thing. I want secularism to become more predominant in our society not any theological madness.

I used to spend a lot of time criticizing Islam on here in the noughties - but things are much better now.

"Presumably you are talking about radical Muslims"
Err, no.
"Porn being abhorrent to Islam and both participants (Including yourself) and producers of such could render themselves becoming victims of the most appalling punishment, from flogging to death"
Hang on. I thought that according to you, that was the way it was going with New Labour, Jimbo!
"Your lack of grasp of political outcomes, beyond your narrow little Socialist view is breathtaking!"
I know. Should have voted Lib Dem at the last election. Eh, Jimbo.

Like I said, anything is possible. Plenty of time for it to go pear-shaped.
"Wishing more religious people into our nation, I think, is a bad thing.
Depends. Would you prefer a moderate Muslim who has a strong sense of family values, community, bringing up children to show respect for their elders, living next door or a bunch of atheist chavs intent on getting pissed up, trashing the environment and showing a total disrespect for everyone around them?
Cheers

Re: Muslims in Tunisia and Egypt
David, oh David,
I love it when well-meaning but sometimes liberal-intentioned
intellectuals talk about freedoms in Third World countries (and outside
Cairo, Alexandria and the Red Sea beach resorts Egypt is still third world).
You are a bright chap Mr Johnson. You`ve read history. The
recent Egypt biz scares the pants off me because it seems like a re-run
of the Russian Revolution. Out goes the Tsar (Mubarek), in comes a well
intentioned, liberal, Nobel-Prize winning intellectual El-Baradei (Kerensky)
wishing to make his country a better place.
And now I wait for "Lenin" to appear ie some fundamentalist
mullah who will make Egypt - for us Westerners - a new place of torment
far more dangerous than Iran or Iraq ever were.
Remember that the 2nd most wanted terrorist in the World
is an Egyptian and he - today - must be smiling from ear to ear !!
Personally, every day I was on the beach last year in Sharm-el-Sheikh I thanked my God for Mubarek`s tough secret police that
showed terrorists no mercy. We can now - in a short space of time - say
goodbye to those cheap Red Sea holidays when Egypt goes arse up !!
