Where in the world?

Post by andy at handiwork »

I'm trying to think of a country that has corporal and capital punishment, applies routine torture to suspects, has scant regard for human rights, holds civil liberties in particular contempt, and where many of the citizens regard attempts made on their behalf to level the playing field between government and the ruled to prevent abuse are thrown back in the executive's face, and other things that some on here feel are missing from the way we should do things in the UK. Dont go there, even on holiday.

The Isle of Man, circa 1976?

I used to spend a lot of time criticizing Islam on here in the noughties - but things are much better now.

Think of an Islamic State and you've got it.

Not sure exactly if this fits the bill but I would point at the recent assassination of Salman Taseer, the Governor of the Punjab in Pakistan.

There seemed to be substantial support amongst certain sectors of the population for his assassination by a bodyguard who authorities said was angry about his opposition to blasphemy laws carrying the death sentence for insulting the Muslim faith.

Cheers

I was pointing out that countries that have any one from that list ( collated from things that we should have here according to many posters) generally have all the rest. As for where, you dont need to go far; Belarus is a good indicator of what sort of society I mean.
