R.I.P Gerry Rafferty

Post by noddy »

Gerry Rafferty, the singer and songwriter who died on January 4 aged 63, had a smash hit in 1978 with Baker Street, a world-weary classic based on his experiences busking in the London Underground as a struggling young musician.

And before anyone says that he did: Bob Holness did NOT play the sax solo on Baker Street...

Such a shame as he seemed unable to beat the bottle. I remember going to buy 'Night Owl' and thinking that it was 'City to City' (the one with Baker Street) which I already had. The cover art is very similar. I think 'Stuck in the Middle with You' is one of the best songs ever.

I heard that Baker Street is played so much it still generated 150,000 ($US I think) a year alone. Surely Heather Mills can claim to be entitled to some of that as I'm sure she wrote it and Gerry stole it!

Baker Street is great but I also loved Get It Right Next Time....

Andy Fairweather Low played the guitar solo on BS and Raph Ravenscroft did the sax if my memory serves me well.....

Baker street was one of the very few records (45s) I bought in the 1970's.

Just as a note for Deano!, the first record ever brought for me (by an older sister) was by his old mate Rolf Harris, just over from Oz when he recorded 'Sun Arise', must have been around 1960, I still have it someplace.
