I think it's fairly meaningless. The vast majority of the population drink, whereas how many use heroin? One per cent? Overall, alcohol abuse will of course be more damaging, given that maybe 40 million people drink. How long did it take them to come up with this?

Just statistics used in the way people want, to make the point they want.

More people die gardening than do from taking ecstasy.
We have need of you again, great king.

Now if only people would up their consumption a little bit more we could solve this problem of over crowding a lot quicker

In moderation its fine compared to hard drugs and in truth nothing new in that claim if you consider too much of anyhting is always bad for you anyway

Cirhossis of the liver is a nasty way to die and alcohol abuse is worse than hard drugs but this will only lend fire to those who would like to see drugs leglaised or impose higher taxes on alcohol .

You can see it coming already

It depends how one looks at these things. Alchohol may cause a lot of deaths and the figure for drug takers may be lower but that is if one just coldly looks at the figures. If it is looked at as a proportion - per capita - of those who take it, I'm sure the figure for death and negative health amongst drug takers is much higher than for drinkers.

Alchohol related issues may casue lots of hospital admissions, and Police time - because of brawling in town centres when pubs close etc - but there is not an epidemic of crime that comes with it like there is with drugs. The amount of muggings that occur in cities because people want money for drugs is very high, there are almost no crimes committed by people wanting money for alcohol; and you don't get gangs shooting each other for alcohol like you do with drugs - so issues to do with crime around drugs is much higher than to do with alcohol.

Also, from what I read once, cocaine users gets 75% towards death on a regular basis, where as someone who enjoys 6 or 7 pints in the pub on a Friday night gets nowhere near death. Very high, and regalur, alchohol consumption can kill you, but standard cocaine use gets near to killing you all the time apparently.

The figures on all this are probably distorted by including weed smoking which is amost harmless - unless done in vast amounts and for many years as it can lead to schizophrenia (if i've spelt it correctly).

People always say that you can make statistics tell any story you like, and that is what this guy seems to have done. Exclude weed smoking and just look at harder drugs, compile the figures per capita of users not just the total amount of people hamred, killed etc; and also look at the gang problems and street crime drugs have associated with them, and I think you will find that drugs are MUCH more harmful than alcohol.

I'm sure even the guy saying this would agree if the question was put this way: "would you prefer your son or daughter to be out on a Friday night drinking 7 beers in the pub, or sitting at home with a crack pipe, injecting heroin, or snorting loads of cocaine?". It seems obvious what his answer would be. Or "would you feel safer living in an area where drug selling is rife (street dealers and people mugging for drug money) or living in an area where alcohol selling is rife (lots of local pubs, and several local breweries)?" Again, his answer would be rather obvious.

Coming off booze if you are an alcoholic is way more dangerous and life threatening than coming off heroin. FACT.
