Rescue

Post by Bob Singleton »

I have been glued to my TV this week watching those poor people get rescued. It was a story which brought hope and happiness to so many from one of the world's most impoverished regions.

Still, I hope Everton stuff them tomorrow

Despite the media circus surrounding the rescue bearing some resemblance to the plot of 'Ace in the Hole', it has been handled rather well by the authorities, and of course one must be grateful for the happy outcome. However it would probably be churlish to point out that had the government taken more care with mine inspections and had more than 3 inspectors covering the 900 mines in the region, the miners might not have been imperilled in the first place. I suppose someone (the mine owners perhaps) had previously complained about pesky health and safety concerns hampering operations and costing jobs. It should also be remembered that a few months before this incident over 400 Chileans had died in a major earthquake that hit the country. At least the rescue gave some well needed collective morale lift. As an aside, and just to show how dangerous and in need of a proper safety regime mining is, up to 7 Chinese miners died every DAY of the rescue operation.

I dont think so. Euphoria at the rescue will be as nothing if the mining industry in Chile continues as it has and treats the safety of miners as badly as it has in the past. Next time a mine that shouldn't have been operating has a cave in and traps the workers half a mile down I doubt if the outcome will be as happy as this time.

Actually, Andy, you HAVE missed the point... even when it was pointed out to you!!! The first line of my original post may seem as if I'm talking about the Chilean miners... the second line, where I say "Still I hope Everton stuff them tomorrow" should make it crystal clear that the "rescue" and the "impoverished region" I'm talking about is actually Liverpool!!!

It's called HUMOUR!!!

Someone told me you were a bit funny... reading your posts I realised they didn't mean funny ha-ha but "funny" in an altogether different way!

Well I suppose I would have to know and care enough about some story concerning a football team first to have got the reference. As for it being pointed out to me, all I can say is after my original posting I did think I had played down the celebratory aspect of the rather more important rescue, so could be said to have missed the point I thought your thread starter was on about. Oh well, mine wasn't as dumb as some postings on here recently.
