According to my late stepfather, it could be argued that the Americans killed-off the hugely successful 1930's-1950's British Film Industry with their refusal to release UK films into their domestic market.
Does anyone have any thoughts on that theory?
I'm intrigued to get hold of some evidence so to speak, especially now that Mr/Ms "UK Consumer" seems perfectly happy to gorge on the "99%-shite"/"1% decent" quotient of films released by Hollywood.

Well it could be argued that the domestic market in the US didn't want parochial British pictures, so distributors there weren't prepared to risk money showing them.

People in the UK listen to American music and watch US films which are as parochial as anywhere on earth. That viewing/listening behaviour has never been reciprocated by our American cousins though. Insularity is seldom a good thing.

As soon as the U.S. decided to join the allies in WW2 the only films they wanted to see were those that showed them winning the war !wink!

well, according to Hollywood, the great success of the "American" Enigma project did have a significant impact on the battle of the Atlantic.
