i have a 10 month old rottie love him to bits hes soft as fuck but can knock me over with one jump up!

Best trainer for bigger dogs is definitely Cesar Milan (Dog whisperer). I think he has a website. I have found his method the most effective by far.

Trained many Rotties and big dogs. As cuddly and lovely as they are when young you must gain control of you r dog from a young age.
I am firm with them,whilst training and of course have fun with them too.

But I also may not know what I am talking about as one bit my finger off this year.

There are other ways to give dogs treats.

A good way is just to ignore them until you're good and ready to say hello: i.e. when they calm down. They get excited because they want your attention and a bit of fuss: so the ideal is to train them to understand that good behaviour brings the most praise. When they jump up, just push them down calmly and firmly (not roughly), and say 'no' in a stern kind of way. It takes time, but they do learn. Otherwise, you could always look up a good dog trainer. Consistency and patience are the key.

Hey Jett, just echoing what Marino said here.

You really need to be firm and consistent with the training and the dog will learn, but expect to get bumped about a bit while its learning. I'm a small girl (5ft and a 7st frame) and have a 10st american bulldog, 8st. bull mastiff and a husky cross who's 5 and a half ft from nose to tail and all of them have been trained in house and respect me as "pack leader".

I had a dogue de bordeaux (turner and hooch dog) who used to jump up and nip when he was a puppy (well, a puppy who's head came to the middle of my chest when he was sat down) and he took a lot of patience to get him behaving. Big dogs respond to consistency with training and with you being the alpha and standing for nothing, coz they will take the piss if they can.

I hear Mick Martin is a very good UK dog trainer - he doesnt take any crap! I would certainly address the problem as even though you say he is not aggressive (and I am sure he is lovely!) the latest dangerous dogs laws are very extreme due to the rise in attacks and if he jumps up at someone who is unable to distinguish between excitable energy and aggression you may be in trouble hun! It's rarely the dogs fault but people can be very sensitive these days. Very best of luck with it, i love dogs! xxx
