Worst Football Grounds

Post by nikonman »

I would be interested in reading what readers of this forum consider the worst football grounds they have been to
The grounds at Chesterfield and Macclesfield leave a lot to be desired.
Unfortunately both clubs do not have the revenue coming in to do much about it.

Been to some real cow sheds in my years, and that included Stamford Bridge!
BUT.......these grounds had real fans, the soul of football. You go to any Premiership Ground and it is devoid of REAL passion, except probably Newcastle and Liverpool who's fans are die-hards, even though they haven't won much over the years, apart from Liverpools European Champions League Cup.
Since modern grounds were built on corporate and sponsors, they have massive allocation of tickets, meaning real fans miss out, hence many grounds, including The Bridge and The Emirates might be top notch, but have a noticable lack of vocal noise compared to yesteryear.
Coventry Citys old ground was a dump, I worked there on match days, it was next to the Red Light area and the toilets had rivers of piss running through them, but the fans always turned out in fine voice and numbers.........nowadays, they play at The Ricoh Stadium and the ONLY time that place has been close to capacity is when Bon Jovi and Red Hot Chili Peppers have played there.

THE old away end at Norwich City's Carrow Road was pretty dire with our fans and the home followers separated by a crappy wire mesh fence.
I went there in 1988 as a Liverpool supporter with my team well on their way to league title number 17.
This particular night game finished 0-0 and I arrived back in Liverpool at 4am. Five hours later I was in my uni lecture in the city!!!

Obviously as a Liverpool supporter, however, the worst ground in our experience has to be the Leppings Lane End at Hillsborough. Having witnessed the 1989 disaster first hand on that fateful Saturday afternoon, I can safely say that had the terracing been designed better to enable people to move SIDEWAYS along the length of the 'End', all those lives would have been saved. The 'pens' structure was paramount, along, of course, with the fences at the front. R.I.P. The 96...

Middlesbrough, when they were at Ayresome Park. Middle of a rough estate in the centre of town.

Students (I was there at Uni 94-97) and the UB40's/unemployed had to stand in the part of the ground without a roof. Great in February, when it's snowing!

Meat pies made from human body parts too.... :(

I have only seen your ground from the train , but it looks a great little ground, and should put some of the league2 grounds to shame next season.
Best of luck i hope Burton come up with you.

I have to side with Ace about Stamford Bridge,it really used to be a right shit hole......but it was our shit hole !happy!

Most of the worst grounds i've been to no longer exist ie:Filbert Street,The Dell,The Den and how can i leave out Plough Lane?,a ground that did'nt even have toilets in the away end. Many other shit holes i've been to in terms of the area include The Library(Arsenal)and Villa Park.

In saying that i've had the pleasure of going to some brilliant stadiums like Old Trafford(has to be said),The Reebok,The Millenium Stadium etc.

Grounds to visit before you die=The San Siro,Nou Camp,Stade De France,Stade Da Luz(Lisbon),Olympic Stadium(Rome) and Schalke 04's ground in Gelshinkershin(sp?).Grounds i reccomend to anyone.

For sheer venom and hatred, the welcome at Ninian Park to fans of Bristol Rovers was way more than I had expected. We needed two lines of police to get us from the car park intot he ground, and it was run-down, exposed, had crap facilities, you name it.

Trashton Gate is another dire ground, no atmos, awful food, surly stewards.

Some of you might have seen our own tinpot stadium during our cup run. It's going to be developed into a 18,000 all-seater. Part of me thinks something will be lost and they are bound to shaft the fans for the privilege through price hikes.

Give me a carp ground with atmosphere over these modern morgues where people look at you strangely if you start to sing.

btw, the Derby chants about "our manager's a Porn star" are superb. Just when I thought chanting was dead...
