Beckham

I hope Capello gives Beckham his 100th cap then runs the circus out of town.

I'd have loved to have seen the poncy, overpaid, overhyped one-trick pony stuck on 99.

Handily for the new England coach, his one trick is being very good at football.

All of the above are true but he is not a one-trick pony, in footballing terms.

His passing remains the best I have ever seen, after Hoddle. His technique shames the generation he came from. He gives 100% in almost every game. He is renowned for his exceptional commitment to training. His dead-ball skills are still better than anyone else's in the England side.

Tell me any other footballer in the national side now or during the past decade that has made more of a contribution or played as well, consistently. There isn't one. He deserves a final cap in a meaningless friendly.

The problem with Beckham is that his brand has eclipsed his talent. Despite that I find Ferdinand, Terry, and Cole, in particular, far more worthy of dislike than Beckham. The wages those three are on really are a joke as to me none of them is world-class player, unlike Beckham, who in his day, was.

Why? Even over the last 2 years -when he's hardly played- he's provided more assists than any other player.

Lennon has no end product and SWP hardly gets a game which just leaves Bentley and Beckham. I'm not saying he's a 1st teamer, but commands a place in the squad due to his delivery, set-pieces and immense experience.

Name me another current England player who has (from memory) 5-6 Premiership winners medals, about 3 FA Cup Winners medals, a Champions League Winners medal, a club championship medal and a La Liga Winners medal (Copa Del Rey in his first season at Real?).

People never liked him because he never had pace to beat his man. They don't get that he never had to beat anybody to get his crosses in........did he?

Thank goodness some sensible people are defending Beckham. He is one of the most outstanding players in english football history. Many don't like aspects of his lifestyle (I can't say I necessarily do either) but it doesn't do any harm to anyone else and he has almost always produced in an england shirt and has always given a maximum effort (which is more you can say for many others).

It is a shame that people go along with the media and the general view on beckham. Anyone who knows football knows that he's a top quality player. Not as good as he used to be maybe but a better bet than Wright-Phillips or anyone else you might wish to play. And gives a considerably better effort than Gerrard in an england shirt.

Sorry - but he hasn't.

Sure - like many players - he's had his moments (like the Greece free-kick or the Argentina penalty). But for the most part he's been a complete washout come the big tournaments (invariably after being hyped up as the great saviour to lead England to glory).

>>

Once again - he's not.

He was - at one time, much less so now - a very good passer of the ball and good in dead-ball situations. And that was about it.

But he was never really a playmaker and never had the skill of people like Best or Hoddle or Giggs or Cantona (to name a few).

Contrary to the myth, he was NEVER the "consumate footballer" and his fame has as much to do with his skilful marketing as an off-the-field "product" as it has to do with his achievements on the pitch.

And it's equally a shame that there are people (including Beckham himself) who still buy into the God-like myth perpetrated by that very same media.

Sam - yeah he has won a shitload of club medals. But just look at the calibre of players he was surrounded by during that time.

I'm not saying he's a "bad" player - but he's not by any means a "great" player, and he's definitely the most over-rated, over-hyped player ever to have pulled on an England shirt
