If it was a Sudanese teacher, she'd have had her 40 lashes by now, and that would be that; Islam, as intolerant as ever. She's a westerner though, and the world is watching. They could have given her a caution, reminding her about Islamic law, but that wouldn't be a good political statement, so they arrest her, to set her free. That's the whole point. She's the equivalent of a 'photo-opportunity', and Islam will not pass it up.

When she's set free, the British will claim it was their pressure that got her freedom, while the Sudanese, and Islamic world will say it was a merciful act; a gift that they did not have to give.

I'm sorry to say that I was wrong. The teacher in question has been sentenced to 15 days imprisonment (it would normally be 40 lashes or 6 months imprisonment).

They've tried to compromise with the light -they would think- sentence.
