Right wing in what way? Criticising a Chancellor/PM who deserves it? Highlighting the fact that he is selling off our assets, borrowing on the never-never, and actively encouraging a credit culture amongst consumers?

If Brown's actions, as opposed to his rhetoric, are left wing, I'm a Dutchman (preferably Marco van Basten). Left wing and right wing are truly outmoded concepts in modern Britain. It's all centrist/global consumerist where business dictates policy. Fuck their supposed affiliations, the political class is self-serving, blind, arrogant and frequently corrupt.

Fat cats have done, and will continue to do, very nicely out of every successive UK government. Brown is too gutless and canny to go after the rich. Ancient Campbell's latest meaningless diatribe to 'hammer the rich' only means hammering those who already share a disproportionate tax burden - the 'middle-management class' - who are 'rich' only in terms of having slightly more than the average. The truly rich earn much and pay little and it will always be like that.

Where is Wazzakins? I'm surprised he hasn't already jumped to the defence of Brown.

Well its not hard to see what happens when there is to much easy credit around as it as happened before the bubble always burst, Brown should have seen this coming and made credit harder to get maybe the Northern Rock episode will act as a wake up call for him but i doubt it because he is to fucking stupid !thumbsdown!

ok - how is he supposed to make getting credit harder?

The traditional method is to raise interest rates - that is now the responsibility of the Bank of England and they've been raising the base rate for months.

Maybe a "correction" in the housing market, perhaps?

They introduced credit controls in the 1960s Maggie abolished them when she came to power and we went from boom to bust, the goverment still have an influence over the Bank of England and Gordon Brown when he was chancellor and now P.M. has a big say in who sits on the commitee who decide the interest rates therefore the goverment still has a big influence on interest rates, it is obvious that rates were to low for to long allowing people to borrow to much you dont need to go to University to see that !cool!

It's not just low interest rates - people have also been raising greater sums of money against the rising equity in their properties for various reasons but mostly to finance their lifestyles (seeing how in Northern Rock's case we are talking about secured borrowing)
