Thanks ATS.

Hell, I did go on a bit in that post, didn't I? Well, that's what six pints does to me.

On the whole, I think Radio One is probably somewhat better than it was 'back in the day'. Yes it has its demographs to play to, but the daytime playlist is a lot more varied, and the catering to specialist music genres and new music a lot wider than it was outside of the peak hours. This was always the intention since the turnaround in the early nineties and they've stuck to it, so good on 'em.

You can go on about Peel and Nightingale all you want, but the were very much fighting against a tide of utter drivel at the time, when the The top 40 really was all you heard. Is Chris Moyles really any worse than Simon Bates was? Or Gary Davies? Or - worse still - Dave Lee Travis? These were DJs for whom the sound of their own voice was the only important thing. I recall Peel saying how he once visited Noel Edmund's house and noted how very few records he could see around the place. Says it all. Some of the DJs on R1 at present may alienate, but I think they at least have some interest in what they're playing.

You may be getting older, gents, but some things must stay young.

btw - might I direct you to 6 Music, which is rather good indeed?

btw(ii) - Pondlife: Agreed. John Humphreys kills the day before it's even bloody started.
