If I may interject a word in this fray...cos you know I always do I cant say I ever watched more than 5 minutes of The Vicar Of Dibley but what I have watched I will deduce its popularity down to what Bob said. Its safe programming and its populaity is due to its tranquil nature that I can imagine a lot of the country ouside of London would find entertaining.
I;m sure if you put it down to demographics (though I have no evidence to support this) I reckon many people in London would prefer Eastender and Corrie ove rthis sort of programme and those who live outside of London in fairly tranquil neighbourhoods would prefer The Vicar Of Dibley as well as Emmerdale. The only proof is in th epudding that The Vicar Of Dibley must have been immensely successful to carry 18 seasons of the series.
I probably like Desperate Housewives because I watch a variety of other shows with too much testosterone....That and the cast is better looking than 24 !happy!

If you just started watching it Keith I can understand but if you foloowed it from the beginning of the season you'd be more attuned to it. However you might just well hate it anyway but I think its one of the best things on tv at the moment...

"an obnoxious public school girl"
Ah, you mean Kirsty Allsopp. But why do you find her obnoxious? Is it beaches she can speak properly? Is it because she has an air of femininity about her (femininity - remember that?)? Or could it be that she never wears jeans or sports tattoos and hasn't been reported rolling round in a pool of vomit of a Saturday night while cackling and shrieking obscenities? Keith, do you prefer strident celebrity slappers like Jade, Jo, or Danielle of Big Brother fame?
I must admit I like Kirsty; she got a 'Nigella' air about her. She's a proper woman and, therefore, in these dark days of the chav bird, I reckon she deserves 'protected species' status.

Re: Who actually watches this?
I think that 'VOD' and 'Some Mothers' are enjoyed by females. I've come to this general view based upon the reaction of my mother, sister, niece and female friends - they love both of these shows.
Personally, with 'VOD' I think it has some slight comedy in it. But 'Some Mothers' was truly awful!! Although give credit to Crawford, he did all his own stunts and was uninsured when performing them. The BBC could not afford personal injury insurance at that time.
