I can't remember the actual name (cos it depends on mobo & bios type) but check your bios for enabling usb power on startup. If you don't then the usb won't get power until windows loads which may be your problem (maybe it's something else)

Worth a try.

Ensure that "USB Legacy support" or "USB Keyboard Support" is enabled in the BIOS.

That's the name I was looking for! Why didn't I just check my own bios? !doh!
