Olay,
I think that they are very paranoid not insular, even though we do live on an island. Ever heard about the guy that went to help a woman who was being assaulted on a railway platform? Because he broke the assailant's cheekbone he was convicted of assault and sent to prison.

Re: British People are generally very insular
I don't agree. I think it's just 'big city' life that causes this behaviour. If you're making decisions on British people by examining Londoners, then almost all other Brits think the same as you do about the ignorance of this city's people.
I found Dubliners pretty ignorant when I've been over. Sorry..they were very friendly until they heard my accent. Maybe it's racial ignorance then? Parisians are far worse than Londoners though!
Though Americans are very social people, and make friends much faster, I find their friendships very disingenuous. They fall out of friendships just as fast as making new friends. *They're friends with anybody that's infront of them, and they're forgotten just as fast.* (* = generalised assumption from my experience, not a factual statement!)
The Aussies are friendly -and the banter is good- but they're not very good at taking in other peoples viewpoints. *Diplomacy and respecting other peoples views aren't the Aussies strong points.*

Brits are very bitchy, IMO. Americans; superficial.
Irish; genuine, funny. Aussies; funny, set in their ways.
Spanish; laid-back, friendly. French; elitist, variable.
Any citizen of a European country/city plagued by Brit stag parties: hostile.
All of this is generalisation (almost bog-standard stereotypes, tbh!!!) based on my experience- as per Sam, NOT fact.
