I agree the Beatles are the most overrated band ever, and the fact that Americans like them is hardly a badge of honour. But, each to his own, I guess.

I was born in '63 and I can just about remember the tail-end of their career, but of course like everyone else I've been bombarded by the Beatles for the past 35 years.

"Stupid comment"? Obviously I've struck a nerve. But if you're going to start tossing around insults then I retort, Sir, that YOU are equally stupid for distorting what I said.

I didn't say that they were crap. Hell, I even quite like a few of their songs (mainly their later material). I said that they were OVERRATED. By which I meant that they are overrated as MUSICIANS.

No-one (and I include myself in this) would dispute the CULTURAL impact that they had. That was phenomenal. But I think a lot of people mix this up with them being great MUSICIANS.

They weren't.

They were decidedly average musicians. In fact the best MUSICIAN of the bunch had to be George Harrison, yet it's Lennon & McCartney who've always been hailed as demi-gods. And Ringo Starr doesn't even register as a blip on the radar.

Yes they were immensely successful commercially, they were the first true "supergroup", they are symbolic of the '60s and all the rest of it. But in my opinion as MUSICIANS they're very overrated.

Like I said, The Beatles weren't crap, but they weren't amazing either for my money.

My main beef about them is that I don't think it should be frowned upon as almost blasphemous to consider that they might not be the "Best Band of All Time" and that others might actually be better than them.

Plus, Paul McCartney's output post-Beatles has - for the most part - been singularly awful. And as for John Lennon, until he was killed he was a washed-up has-been whose very ho-hum comback album "Double Fantasy" was on its way back down the charts having made only a moderate impact. Then he's murdered and suddenly his records are shooting back up to Number One just about everywhere, and everyone' suddenly saying that he was the greatest musician of all time blah blah blah.

A similar thing happened with Nirvana (another vastly overrated band in my opinion). Until Kurt Cobain died I didn't think they were any more special than other bands around at that time like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. These bands were every bit as popular as Nirvana, then suddenly when Cobain died they were forgotten about and Nirvana were elevated to ridiculous proportions. They were alright, but they weren't that special, or at least nothing like as special as people suddenly made them out to be.

And as for Eric Clapton claiming that Ringo Starr is a great drummer, I'm not if that's much of an endorsement to be honest, WZR. True, he's had his moments, but I just can't see what constantly elevates this guy into the top five guitarists of all time in music polls.
