A quote from A.C. Grayling:
'Tolerance is the centrepiece, and paradox of liberalism. For liberalism enjoins tolerance of opposing viewpoints, and allows them to have their say, leaving it to the democracy of ideas to decide which shall prevail. The result is too often the death of toleration itself, because those who live by hard principles and uncompromising views in political, moral and religious respects always, if given half the chance, silence liberals because liberalism, by it's nature, threatens the hegemony they wish to impose.'
Tolerance has to stick up for itself to a certain degree, but total tolerance would have to tolerate the intolerant. This would mean intolerance always wins. So some forms of intolerance can subdue the intolerant.
Tolerance and intolerance are both needed for a stable community, and their levels need to adapt to different regions, peoples, and times.

I read your post with wry amusement, first when I was working abroad I did so as a qualified electrical engineer, been to college etc. but the way you seem to lump or view people in the construction industry is exactly what you're accusing me of.
My compatriots home and abroad range from Nuclear scientists to artists(one of whom had in the past painted Lady DI) Including a dwarf who appeared in "The Libertine" with Johnny Depp, Pretty eclectic eh!
Not exactly Oz off "Auf wedersehn is it"? most of my mates have degrees, Engineering, fine arts, some them have degrees in... Bio-chemistry (my sister in law) that's research isn't it?
Don't think I'm a right-winger either, I've had some moronic experiences with that ilk as well.
