Who's 'YOUR' favourite Brit of all time?

Isambard Kingdom Brunel - We all know he was a great engineer but he also had the ability to convince financiers, inspire his workers and maintain the high standards that ensured the success of his projects. A remarkable man.

My other two are Newton and Paine for the same reason you and Bob give.

I have two favorites, and they were both men who worked on their own and achieved great things.

Alfred Wainwright - mainly known for the amazing series of Lake District walking books. He spent about 20 years walking every path and mountain in the Lake District and then wrote (and drew) wonderful books about them.

John Harrison - spent his life building wonderful clocks, the most accurate in the world at the time, yet he was a self taught man. Helped solved the longitude problem which up to that time had made sea travel very dangerous.

His clocks still run to this day, and some are in the Greenwich museum.

Of course I agree with Newton, Shakespeare, Darwin etc

There are so many famous "Brits"; the choice is difficult. Shakespeare is the obvious one, but you've got to consider the different fields, such as:
science: I agree with Slater, Newton and Darwin;
arts: IMHO, Constable;
sports: Sebastian Coe, or maybe Paula Radcliffe;
movies: Deborah Kerr, or maybe Diana Rigg;
military: Wellington, the Iron Duke, and Lord Horatio Nelson;
politics (only recent): Winston Churchill of course, but don't forget Lady Margaret Thatcher, who had the guts (not to say the balls) to tackle Argentina's dictators and to curb the then omnipotent trade unions.

if it wasnt for him, many of the "great brits" named wudnt even be alive!!!.....with the excepton of darwin, shakespeare and newton...
