Quantum are ok, they sell brand new for a low cost as well.
Compaq are reliable machines, dont know about their costs though.
Wouldn't touch Dell, Hewlett Packard or Gateway.

LOL, when I was in college, I considered Hewlett Packard, but the College had a deal with Packard Bell, you know them are all sister companies. With the fucking trouble they had with their systems going nuts all the time, it was a case of "Fuck that Shit", I'm gonna get my own made, LOL.

If your after a fairly low end, reliable (to a certain degree) cheap system, also check out the European company, ACER.
I've used their Desktops before, fairly Robust machines, but they HATE Programming Language software, & Linux! !laugh!
