Charley Varrick.
Walter Matthau classic which has everything - including the sensational Joe Don Baker.
WATCH IT!
underated films.
Re: underated films.
Definitely agree Withnail and I is vastly overated...and that Friday 13ths are underrated - i love those films!
My underated are:
Memphis Belle (look at them flyyyyy!)
Office Space
Shallow Grave
any of those kinda "maniac in a big truck in america chasing innocent ppl" films : Dual, Breakdown, Joy Ride, (Jeepers Creepers to a lesser extent i suppose)..
Its always hard to think of films like this when you want to - ill think of more no doubt.

Tricky. Some go underrated due them not clicking with the public, despite plaudits elsewhere. Others deserved better than the critical mauling dished out liberally.
A Hollywood five then:
Bad Boys 2 (Bay's style of direction finds its natural home here - and what a fucking car chase. A huge guilty pleasure).
To Live And Die In LA
Alien 3
Jackie Brown
Pale Rider (and perhaps superior to the overrated Unforgiven).

"Duel" IIRC was Steven Speilberg's 1st directorial effort; made-for-TV movie.

Can I put in a word for The Offence, a British film made by Sydney Lumet as part of the deal for Connery doing Diamonds Are Forever. Connery has never been better, and Ian Bannen matches him with no problem at all.

I agree about Frenzy. It caught Covent Garden in the early 70's just before the market left. And Barry Foster was excellent as the psycho killer. "Lovely, lovely, lovely, lovely." Great stuff.

NO WAY!
This film was as dull as Gene Hackman's vastly overrated 'The Conversation.'

Underrated films.
The Negotiator - quality action movie with a good story and cast.
Shallow Grave - funny, tense, and a really creepy Christopher Eccleston
Casino - better in every way than Goodfellas, I love this film.
Overrated films.
Withnail & I - funny film? I think not
Open Water - fanny flash then floating in the water for 50 mins, yawn!!

Salem's Lot.
For sheer atmosphere, creepiness and chilling terror this film is tough to beat, if made for TV initially. I saw the seen with Mr Barlow when I was five, and have been disturbed since...... the myth and the intrigue builds, and then you see him...........those yellow eyes, the teeth. A visual juggernaut!
Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi stuff is extremely clever............ Robocop may look trashy now, but the concept, the story and the futuristic satirical sideswipes were a good touch; Total Recall was another well-thought out and thought provoking flick. Yet many look upon these movies as tacky action-based trash and miss the point completely.
John Carpenter's stuff........... The Thing, Halloween, Precinct 13- not as lauded as they should be.
I thought Halloween 3 was quite good, tbh. The evil toy manufacturer idea taken a wee bit far........ a good try.
'Glory' with Broderick and Freeman?
Face/ Off was pretty enjoyable, pretty underated IMO.
The Hand That Rocks The Cradle???
I'll save this chat for the IMDB.............. I lose many days there. I pursue one line of inquiry then I meander.............and like a chain reaction of curiosity and intrigue, I'm sucked in. I arrive at work, babbling and jaded.
To see:
Oldboy
Zatoichi
Battle Royale 2
Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
