I think I heard something some years back about them having connections with the IRA, as in making donations to them.

Yup were donating in USA to Noraid for a number of years.

The original IRA/McDonalds rumour comes from McDonalds' IRA payment system (Individual Retirement Account) for some of their workforce.

I can find very little evidence in the Noraid/McDonalds connection too, apart from a lot of people insisting so.
