They draw a cartoon inferring Islam is an intolerant and violent religion, so what do they do in protest?
Hold an armed demonstration at a European embassy. Why do they not just stand up and say "Yes, You are right"

I think the issue on this particular event is quite sensitive. Islam prescribes the creation of any images of Allah, but I'm not sure how thiat applies to his Messenger, Muhammed. I appreciate that we need to be sensitive to any deeply-held religious beliefs BUT the simple fact is, if that depiction is permitted by law in a particualr country there's nothing else to say. To me, the burkah and the treatment of women by certain elements within Islam are completely unacceptable. It doesn't meant that I feel I have the right to go to Pakistan, or Iran ,and threaten their citizens or national interests. I leave that to George Bush, the West's very own fundamentalist jihadist.
What saddens me is that Islam was once known as a progressive and forward-looking, tolerant faith. I've read a lot about the Islamic culture of Andalucia (Al-Andalus), for example, and spent days wandering around the stunning mosques of Cordoba and Granada. Hard to believe that that regime treated all of its subjects the same, irrespective of religion, and was a Mecca (ha,ha) for scientific and medical study.
There can be no rational dialogue with anyone who believes their Book to be the literal word of their God: Jew, Christian, or Muslim. (All of those faiths have their basis in Judaism. I view Islam as a Judeo-Christian sect, which is the deep irony of the whole antipathy between the two faiths). Basically we're encountering time-travel difficulties: 21st century meets 16th century. The gulf is too wide for either side to bridge and I for one do not wish to indulge anyone who wants to live 500 years in the past. We've fought long and hard in the West to enter an age, which despite its imperfections, is based in rationality. To surrender that process is completely unacceptable.

Yes, I've got to agree with the good Officer, that "Chatterji" was one of the most intelligent and rational statements that I've read on here.
Before we start kicking off against the Muslim faith Lets not forget the good things that the Muslims have given us,for example: Mathematics [al-gebhra] was his name, Einstein and Newton would have been fucked without him, medicine, when the so-called civilised west was burning and torturing "Heretics", the muslims were copying ancient texts from Greek and Roman periods, and using knowledge and rationality to bring Medicine out of the dark ages, without we would be well and truly up shit-creek nowadays.
When I was doing a law course at the local tech. one of others was a Muslim lad from Eritrea, who was trying to make a go of being a good citizen in this country, he drank beer, was pretty secular in his life-style, but I think that he probably would be angry at the cartoons, I think this argument between "Western Civilisation" and Islam is one that has always gone on, from the time Mohammed went to the mountain, Christianity had a problem that has never gone away.

From an observation, christianity seems to be taken a lot less seriously than other religions which is why its ok to poke a bit of fun at it. Poke too hard and you can stir up a hornets nest. Muslims take their religion far more serious and shouldnt be expected to see the funny side of it.
C'mon lets face it, why poke fun at anyone if they are overly sensitive? You are asking for trouble and by god you'll get it. They can't take a joke?...Not when it comes to their religion, so why go there?
Lets face it poking fun at anyones set of beliefs religious or otherwise, depending on the joke smacks of disrespect....So I can understand whats going on here...Lets just hope it blows over rather than fan the flames of discontent. Making jokes like this public was only going to stir up controversy. Lets be honest.

i fear that some of the more feeble minded posters are forgetting that though in britain we no longer have a democracy we are still free and by being free we have the right to vent our thoughts. so for those who may find a cartoon in bad taste all i can say is beware because these very same people do not like you watching porn and will if permitted stop you watching that also.

The way I see it is that now Islam is the majority religon where as before it was Christanity/Catholism so the "mickey taking" has changed to Islam as well. I remember when Monty Python's Life Of Brian was released and look at the uproar that caused, same with the William Dafoe "Jesus" Movie (which the name escapes me!!).
