Your question is rhetorical at best because you know very well that millions of Muslims have been offended by these cartoons.

However, this story does highlight serious issues concerning freedom of expression in liberal secular societies vis-a-vis the genuine, historical-cultural sensitivies of certain groups - including Muslims - now living within those societies. This used to be a fairly esoteric concern but now that we all effectively occupy the same global village (including it's virtual suburbs) it's one that will increasingly be affecting us all for the forseeable future (e.g. the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill).

Constructive contributions to this thread are welcome but anything reeking of overt or covert prejudice will be removed. If this topic proves to be too demanding upon the maturity of some members, the entire thread will be taken down. Of course, it could be that no one gives a toss...

What I don't really understand is why you can poke fun, perhaps be derogatory to one religion, yet for others you can't touch. Scientology, Jehova's Witnesses, the Druid Community all seem fair game along with Christianity and Judaism to a certain extent (there is a boundry with these). Yet with Islam you can't.

Is that because there is no tolerance in Islam or are other religions simply spineless in standing up for what they believe in? Is it simply that personal subjectivity or personal exposure to other faiths that is the problem? Is it the media that is to blame for fueling the fire? Or is it that 'we' don't understand what Islam represents through ignorance and poor religious education?

Life Of Brian or Last Temptation Of Christ, anyone? There are people in most, if not all, religions who will see offence where none is intended.

The faith of those who get angry cannot be very deep if they feel a few cartoons, or a book or a film, can diminish their god, their prophet or the founder of their religion.

Choose atheism: you get to keep your sense of humour and sense of perspective----but the holidays are shite!

Lets face it, 'Humour' isn't the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Islam.....

i think i really fancy a bottle of french wine and a danish bacon butty right now.well done to those western countries for standing up to the Islamofascists.i would bet my house that no British papers will have the guts to print them .that wouldnt go along with the multicultural doctrine that has fucked so much up in Britain.moslems have to realize that we in the west are not subserviant to their violent, intolerant madness.we live in a democracy and seeing as moslems are relative newcomers to western countries if they find our way of doing things and sense of humour unpalatable they can go to saudi arabia and sit there with long faces all day if that makes them happy
