I think of myself as being British after my first identity which is Welsh.
But I feel insulted when I'm lumped in with the English as if they are the only people to inhabit the British Isles.

I'm English but lived in Aberdeen for 15 years before returning back recently. The Scottish are very patriotic and some are anti-english but after the raw deal they've been given for hundreds of years and continue to get I don't blame them at all.
In the governments mind, everyone's English while the going is good but as soon as things start falling apart and they need to appoint balme somewhere other than at tehir own door it's Scottish, Welsh and Irish.

I'd be surprised if the uneducated overseas readers didn't think of British as meaning English,no disrespect to the Scots & the Welsh
The Northern Ireland angle is largely seen as Irish not British IMHO
Unlike the other lesser/great divide Berlin,I can't see Ireland ever re-uniting
The economic divide is too great
More to do with money than anything else,no doubt

Re: what does british mean?
I would say float Scotland, and NI off as autonomous states within the EU as they're more of a burden than they're worth ... and I'm sure they could function ok by themselves. I don't think Wales could function as an autonomous region as they are too reliant on England to a much greater extent. I don't think the tag British means anything to citizens, nobody thinks of themselves as British unless they are a lunatic protestant in NI or a useless sheep farmer in the Malvinas.

Re: what does british mean?
what raw deal is that then? the Scots get more per head spent on them by the British government than the English, they take more out of the economy than they put in, they have their own parliment, own laws and can even vote on purely english matters which only works one way.!
sounds like a pretty good deal to me
